During the day especially around the morning and evening rush hours, chances are you will get to where you want to go quicker or just as fast in Vancouver using sky train then driving because of how bad congestion is.

Currently for example Surrey Central to Downtown Vancouver with current traffic driving is showing 37 mins, where sky train ride is 37/38 mins.

Why spend money on gas and parking to arrive no earlier really then taking the sky train? By the time you find parking, pay for parking, chances are the transit user got to the office first..lol

Depending on where one lives and congestion on roads, driving may not be any quicker.

~16K / year. 37 mile one way commute. I was attending grad school downtown up through last year but I've graduated now. As a result, my mileage should drop significantly this year. I bought a Mazda 3 with the smallest engine that gets ~50mpg on the highway a couple of years ago, love that little car.

Around 15k miles/year in the 4 years I've been here.

Was less, but then I unretired myself last year and now I go around all the eastern half of the state photographing houses.

8 -10k miles or so. The husband & I share one car & we're both semi-retired. He works totally from home, & I work very locally (--can bike or walk to work when weather is OK--).

The most miles we put on our car are from our regular monthly visits to elderly family in other states. Then the husband has some professional meetings/conferences per year in various cities here across the northeast USA, most best accessed by car.

I do miss the public transport (trains/bus) in southern England. :(

Nope. Probably ~20k of that is from commuting and driving around at work. Most of the rest is from road trips. I could probably add a few k more for rental cars when I do travel for work, which is quite often.

I have to agree, though those didn't affect me nearly as often as the underground transport problems whenever we'd try to visit family in central London on the weekends. Always a pain to try to get anywhere specific, with all the line closures/work/rerouting/etc. :(

We bought the Highlander when we came over at 83,000 miles. It has just ticked over 170,000 which is just under 20,000 a year. Considering that work is 6 miles away (call it 3,000 miles a year) and the kids cycle to school, i don't understand how we have managed that

On a slight tangent, but for the bikers here.

I just read a review about someone who was moving, had a Surly fatbike, Cannondale roadie, Santa Cruz for XC and a Rocky Mountain DH on the back of the car hitch.

Got rearended.

Almost $35K written off and that's not including damage to the SUV :o

I don't think that 99.99% of people would get any more enjoyment out of a $8,000 bike than a $1,000 bike, or even a $500 bike for that matter! That said, the owner who placed bikes that cost that much, on a trailer hitch is an idiot, twice over.

I don't know...not that I have the money for it, but there's something said for a full carbon bike that has as much travel in the suspension as they do. Heck, some of these $10K bikes weigh nearly as much as my front fork :lol:

You're right most probably wouldn't.

Though you wouldn't ride one of those bikes to the grocery store either, you wouldn't ride a single speed bike 30 miles to get to a trail either and riding down hill is a very different style to riding single track cross country in say Utah compared to Vermont and it's a very different, technical style down here in MA, hence most people having a hitch for multiple bikes, as a lot of folks group ride and lot of trails don't have much parking so it makes sense.

*waves* I see it more as saving time by multitasking and combining two endlessly-recurring life tasks, shopping and exercise.

Mr Kodokan probably does about 3-4000 miles a year. When we moved here we deliberately got a house that's 4 miles from his work, so he does less than 2,000 miles for commuting, given vacations and business travel. He bikes there sometimes, too, as it only takes 5-10 mins longer than driving and doubles up as exercise for him.

I lived without a car for years in Europe, and plan to go back to doing so as soon as we no longer have to live in dull suburbs for school districting purposes. So this is like a practice run to see how practical that is in the US.

I pushed Mrs P to buy a house about as far away from my office as I thought I could get away with, no doubt beyond what most people would consider "reasonable". :unsure:

I also plan to buy as many cars as Mrs P will allow me to. Unless I win a major lottery prize I am unlikely to challenge Jay Leno, but with lottery money I would certainly give it a shot! :nod:

The problem I had with living close to work was that I would more often take the car and come home for lunch instead of cycling to work. 5-10 mins by car, 15-20 by bike.

The other issue we've found that being close to work also means if there's anything up, the missus is the first one called to check things out.

Like confirming that the alarm going off is because they're being robbed, rather than someone trying to shag the ATM at midnight.

Because, all that money spent on security is just for decoration :/

You and Mr K would get along roaringly well on this matter. His personal record for number of cars simultaneously owned is 7 or 8 (he lived on a farm with plenty of outbuildings, and not all of them actually worked). He has had 2-3 for most of the years I've known him; currently it's two, but there's mutterings about adding a third and taking up rallying this year. That'd push his annual mileage up a tad!

So today I have an oil change scheduled for 3k miles since the last change in... November. Definitely driving more than I used to.

We'd be changing the oil every six weeks in our Accord if we changed at 3,000 mile intervals. It's bad enough going every 4-5 months. But 10,000 mile intervals (with full synthetic oil) didn't stop the engine getting to virtually 300,000 miles. :thumbsup:

In the UK I had an old clunker that practically required it every 10 miles. I wouldn't need to change... It would just drain. Always carried 2 oil containers in the back. :lol:

Got a good deal on Groupon for this change, so not much issue.

Almost $100 a pop...plus, you don't keep your car till it's ready for the scrap heap do you?

So it's really not worth it.

Plus synthetic oil is good for at least 5K miles.

Our 2002 Ford Escape with ~175,000 miles on it, we do 12,000 miles a year - it gets an oil change twice a year. Between oil changes I top the oil up with the cheapest walmart type brand oil. Full oil change at the local service station (oil +filter) is $35 cash.
