You could also try and find some Radio 4 comedies. We have enjoyed (in no particular order) "Elvenquest", "Rudy's rare records", "Fags, Mags & Bags" (set in a corner shop), "Cabin Pressure" and of course Hitchhikers Guide. "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue" is also good entertaining listening.

Why "audio books"? They're horribly edited (cut down) for time.

What's wrong with regular or e-books?

It's just so we can all listen to them whilst in the car (and I'm driving).

Best one we've had so far was "My Family and other animals" by Gerald Durrell. I loved this book as a kid and my kids loved listening to it as we drove across Spain from Vittoria to northern Portugal. My son still comes out with "Oh Mother, how could you teach us to be so selfish".

Same as petitefrancaise, we use them all the time in the car. The kids both get travel sick unless they look out of the window, so reading, coloring, watching DVDs on tablets, etc, has always been out of the question. Plus I prefer it this way, especially on road trips - I want them to at least be aware of their passing surroundings and how the landscape changes.

I choose carefully to make sure the narrator can actually read well, and we always get the unabridged versions. My son yesterday finished listening to the audio of Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth - over 45 hours long!

I am so jealous of anyone who can read in a car, just reading a text or email makes me want to upchuck - seriously I'm that bad. I am absolutely fine otherwise, oh unless I'm traveling facing the wrong way, that's another no no!

I'm currently addicted to the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbo ... also listening in the car as it seems I actually live in my car now. Probably not age appropriate for a 12 year old but who cares? We keep children too young for too long these days anyway.
