It is a difficult choice. I've only done relatively short US domestic flight with young sir. One time he had a cold so the meds were to help decongest too. We don't generally drug him up as a matter of course though. Thing is with a 15 hour flight any meds you give at the start will wear off.
Make sure the kid is sucking on something going up and down that helps. Try and stick to your normal routine. Remember to pack a change of top for yourself as well as for the kid in carry on. I recall our first flight, I ended up with pee all over my top and I was glad to have a fresh one to change into. We have the basinet area reserved I am told. So I plan turn on the charm during check in and see if the person checking us in at the airport will help NOT have anyone sit between my wife and I so we will have a seat. in the middle and hopefully can have my son sit there from time to time...

Oh, I see...There's lots of media I download and watch on my ipad but I use freeware to download from youtube and then convert for watching...
I'll see if I can find a guide.. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388467,00.asp http://www.amazon.com/forum/tablet?_...x2LD3RYHV8MIEM http://kidstabletwifi.com/how-to-add...r-kids-tablet/ Basically though you download from whatever tablet service you've bought in to. Or you convert DVD's you own, of which there are many guides on the web.

I always make a plane bag. A new bag they have never seen and fill it with new things. A new book, a new toy, colouring in, stickers, snacks they have never had before. A change of top for you as well as a change of clothes for the little one. A sweater for when it's cold. Ask for a family row with a child seat placement if they have. BA gave us a car seat thing that attached to the wall. Never bother with a tablet. Just let them watch the tv. Youngest didn't even have headphones, just liked the moving pictures. I took PJs and her sleeping bag. Then was it was bedtime she got changed into those to make it seem like a normal night.
Honestly it's going to be fine. Planes are noisy, move all the time and have vibrations, perfect conditions for them to fall asleep. Plus the staff make a real fuss of mine and are constantly bringing them stuff. My read is that he isn't at that age where he gets into TV or whatever. His attention span is very little with those things :(

I drug myself up on Benadryl to help me drop off for a couple of hours. When the Little Lion was truly little he would sleep like a log on planes - in his own seat so I wasn't disturbing him. If you can avoid naps before setting off that helps. Other than that I think it also depends how sensitive their ears are. You can't make them sleep for 15 hours anyway.

Don't do it. Phenergan is not recommended for children under the age of 12. It is used mostly to treat nausea and vomiting, and has a sedative affect. There have been cases of children having respiratory depression with this drug.
They said that few years ago it was common practice on long haul flights but I read some scary stuff about it...mainly reading on the internet though, |
Re: Random questions..
Tab 2 or 3 would be good value for money. Can get refurbs for peanuts on newegg shipped quickly. Just dump movies on a microsd card and you're good, lot easier than flapping about converting stuff.
Drugs for kids can be iffy, can definitely go either way and it's not a great idea on a long flight. If the kid is into solids, a chewable sweet might be a good idea for the ears as it'll be the worst for them. |

Definitely do what Weeze says, my son was 2 and I packed a new toy/book/activity etc for every hour we'd be flying - so 10 hour flight = 10 new things. He had sticker books, crayola magic markers were great, little toys, a new story book. I wrapped them up so they were like presents :) What with that AND the tv AND meals I'm sure you'll be fine. Definitely take a lot of snacks and buy enough drinks once you're through security (don't forget formula etc if he still has milk). What worked for us was to stick to his normal routine so pajamas on at 'bedtime', milk, story etc. He only slept for 6 hours (normally has 11) so was tired but didn't grumble at all :) |

Re: Random questions..
And if he does scream, buy a round of drinks for the neighbours, or hand out chocolate:)
I actually don't mind screaming babies, they can't help it. However I hate my seatback being kicked by young children who's parents won't keep them in line:frown: |

Yeah, no doctor will go on record recommending dosing the kid up on Benadryl. Oh the other hand many parents swear by it. Word of warning, some kids react to Benadryl differently and can get hyper so try it out in advance.
Be prepared to take shifts walking up and down the aisle smiling at the other passengers and mouthing "sorry". Id recommend the lots of little snacks in individual bags, and lots of little toys/distractions. if you have it in a separate bag, then every time they are starting to fret you can pull out the next random distraction/small snack and stave it off. if they can see the stuff in the bag - they can start to demand it so its better if what you pull out is a surprise. if the portions are small then it doesn't matter of you use up a lot of them. if they are fiddly to eat all the better as (example) picking up the cheerios slow them down and make it a longer distraction. for the toys, think simple new things that you dont care too much about. ie if they drop the toy car under the seat and you cant find it - so what. another idea was one of those small hand sized doodle magnetic pads. they scribble on it with the attached pencil, swipe it and repeat. its quiet, non messy and nothing to lose. have a small lightweight blanket so you can wrap them in it or cover their eyes/head so its 'darker' if they want to nap. and an few spare pacifiers if that's their thing. remember you can get a tag for your stroller at the luggage desk and then take the stroller right to the airplane door. (then they take it and shove it in the hold - and should bring it to the plane door first at the other end. can make it a LOT easier to tote all the baby stuff to the plane.) if you can , take a spare basic outfit (just tshirt or onsie and pants or whatever) and several extra diapers. i've been on a plane with an 18 months old who managed to tip a whole drink over themselves and i had to run up and down the airport when we connected and buy a dry shirt (as my 'spare was already covered in dinner), and then had also run out of diapers as for some reason my child decided to do multiple 'big jobs' - but waited each time til i has just changed him - using up way more than i expected lol! |

My son is just in the transition stage so I dont think he is ready for crayons and drawing and focusing on watching something on TV etc...which is a bummer coz that takes away couple of hours worth of distraction. Our hope is he sleeps 6-7 hours and then its another 6-7 hours for us to entertain him. Praying all goes well. getting really paranoid and tensed over this! |

Re: Random questions..
I've flown PHX to LHR with a 1 year old and a two year old. No problem on the overnight flight to London. Flight back to Phoenix was a nightmare. Both boys picked up a sudden bug. Started vomiting and pooping. Cabin crew were useless, just gave use the last sheet of paper towel and were tied up with someone being ill in the toilet. They were happy for the kids to puke on the seats and us just cover it up with blankets. Luckily for us we had more than the usual amount of diapers so we were dealing with just the puke everywhere and not poop. We were even approached by another lady who asking if we had any spare diapers. To top it off they even puked on the shuttle bus back from the airport to the car park.
Hope your trip goes better than ours did. |
