Question on etiquette

As someone that isn't religious at all (nor is the wife), I think your original suggestion of booze is an excellent one!

We have been invited to a friends house for lunch after her daughters first communion this weekend. We are pretty close with the family, and it is only a small gathering - I think 2 other families plus us. Wife just asked me whether we should take a present, and if so, what. My suggestion of a six pack and a bottle of wine apparently was not correct. And nor was the follow up "don't ask if you don't want an honest answer...."
Help? Anyone?

When I was a kid, I absolutely loved cash gifts.
Grownups always give you what they think you want, not actually what you do want.

A science or engineering toy may be more appropriate then!
My wife recently attended a first communion for a friend (we're Jewish). If you are uncomfortable with a religious gift, money in the form of cash/check or gift card is quite appropriate.

OK, thank you very much for the ideas, suggestions (some better than others, looking at nobody in particular, but you know who you are
) and the support for my original idea...
Against my better judgement, a visit was made to James Avery where I parted with about $70 for a silver (looking) chain with a pendant thingy on it that is apparently ideal for a 9 year old girls first communion. Or so the saleslady told me.....

Shame - shiner are doing a lovely prickly pear beer right now. A 12 pack of that would have been ideal.
