Price of eggs...up up up
California's new law for battery cage free chickens took effect 1/1/15. On average an egg farm will hold 50% less birds than before. This is expected to have an impact on egg prices nationwide.

Re: Price of eggs...up up up
That should be good news for local egg producers. There should be less of a price disparity between cheap supermarket eggs and locally sourced farm eggs.
Our local producers typically charge between $3 and $3.50 for really good quality eggs. Where my daughter lives, Cape Cod, they pay $7 for a dozen farm eggs. Apparently feed is more expensive there, plus there are fewer suppliers and more people willing to pay the premium. Here, in rural New York State, there are plenty of folks trying to supplement their income by selling eggs, including Amish families. One problem is, not sure whether anyone looks too closely into what some of the farmers actually feed the chickens...

Decent eggs are around $3.50
Farm fresh, or folks who have chickens, go for around $5-8 a dozen. That said, cousins in western tip of the state flog theirs for a few bucks as they have about 30 + chickens, so that's a lot of eggs daily.

So we can eggspect to shell out more? That's no yolk.
It was going to be said eventually, now it's out of the way and we can all move on. Thank me later.

Re: Price of eggs...up up up
Eggs, like a lot of other standard groceries (coffee would be another example,) seem to have evolved over the years. When I first came to the U.S., 1970s, even in a big supermarket there was just one kind of egg sold, described as "US Grade A". I remember they were always white, and tasted crappy. Even at that time, in England, there was always a choice between brown and white eggs if I recall correctly.
Now, all grocery stores seem to have a multiplicity of eggs available at widely different price points, including national brands ... Land O'Lakes for instance. My observation is that the expensive supermarket eggs don't taste much better than the basic cheap supermarket eggs. To get a decent tasting egg, you have to get locally farm produced eggs either directly from the farm or from the whole food shop etc.
