In my neck of woods, we call them turn signals. But blinkers is another word that could be used, but a bit old-fashioned. I never heard the term 'indicator lights' until my OH moved here.

"Indicators" in the UK and of course we also have the "boot" and the "bonnet" just to cause even more confusion.

In some states, they call them flashers. We all know that has another meaning!!!!

When I'd been driving my Volvo here for about a year the indicator switch stopped working.
I took it back to the dealership and asked them to fix it under warranty.
My very friendly service guy laughed like crazy and called various associates of his over - "Well you're not Texan, that's for sure! Most people wouldn't notice it was broke", to which his colleague added "Yeah, but he's a Brit, so he wore out the turn signals - we shouldn't cover it under warranty!".

Apparently amber is the "official" name.

OF's mistake was saying "orange" with the "amber." If he had stuck to "amber" he would have been OK. US lights ARE amber, but more of a yellowish amber rather than an orangy amber.

Mind you when i first moved here i was always getting beeped at for not turning right on red, i'd just happily sit there waiting for the light to turn green. Now when i'm stuck behind someone in the right lane on a red i always think "oh they must be British".

People here do use them -- except for immigrants and people who drive Mercedes Benz's.

The turning on the red -- that used to be a California thing only [if I had not had my military ID, I would have been ticketed in Virginia in 1970]. I think Woody Allen joked about it in one of his flicks. It has since spread nationwide.

I was told - your rear wheels must be past the white line before amber changes to red, otherwise you get a ticket. You can't argue 'dangerous to stop' just because you were going faster than the speed limit. Maybe you could argue a big truck was on your tail showing no signs of stopping

Not right
I drive a big truck how the f**k can anyone tell if a truck in the mirror is not going to be able to stop ?
The front wheel must be over the line when they change to red and even then if it seems that no attempt to slow is made you will get a ticket, if the rear wheels had to be over the line the front of a truck would be well clear of most crossings

The truck I drive has special circumstances because it carries liquid with no baffles, if I am nearing a traffic light crossing and it changes to amber I sometimes have to accerorate to clear the crossing due to the movement of the load, as I have said many times before a loaded tanker will actually surge faster after braking and push the truck over the crossing thats why it's so f**kin stupid to pull out of or cut in front of a tanker truck

CA DMV official handbook -
" Solid Yellow – A yellow signal light means “CAUTION.†.... "
No occurrences of the word 'amber' in the whole doc.
