I worked on the development of an automated consumer verification tool for a large credit card company. One of the third party data sources we integrated into the tool derived their data from what they called a "consumer footprint". This meant magazine subscriptions, warrantee cards and (I'm not joking) pizza delivery data. It turns out that pizza delivery address data is one of the most accurate sources in the country. We also integrated DMV data, Social Security data, credit bureau "header" and trade line data, police records, federal/state/local records, planning permissions, previous income estimates, ect, etc.
Long story short, we integrated 9 different sources into the tool and added some pretty advanced heuristics and matching logic. Off of your SSN or even phone number, we could do almost anything you saw in this animation. I looked myself up... it was scary.
Just remember, if you apply for a credit card or any other type of loan, you're signing a form that allows the issuer complete access to almost any record they want to pull. Insurance companies operate the same way.

I used to work for a telecoms company who I'll just call NCI/PerldCom, and it was frightening at the absolute lack of security on customer's billing records. By mapping to a particular environment, I could see my friend's billing statements and call records. No passwords at all.
The lesson must be, always pay your bills and buy things with cash.

Try buying a one-way airline ticket for cash at the airport and see what kind of security screening you get ...
