Direct sunlight on its own works (it was 10F yesterday but the sun still melted ice on our drive) but the calcium will help get rid of the thicker patches of ice.

Calcium Chloride (bags usually say 'ice melt' on them) and direct sunlight, if your driveway has sufficient exposure work well for us.

Re: Pet Peeves?
Sorry, but I only just saw your post. That is exactly the point I was making. I haven't really had the opportunity to come across American brand cars such as Ford, GM, etc., since the nearest dealerships are fifty or more miles away, no one I know owns an American car, unless they bought an old pre-used one. I certainly didn't in any way, shape or form criticize any domestic brand car. Not sure what filter it is you are using when you read that post. My post wasn't that complex or subtle, it was only a few sentences long ...

Large companies with contracts departments that are just full of box tickers and can't work with things that don't fit into their stupid little forms...

No it's not. If you have 2 small kiddos, a cart full of groceries you usually put kids in car, strap them in, unload groceries into car and then, what??? Walk away from the kids in the car to find a cart park or unstrap kids put them back in cart and push them to the cart park??
Oh yes please.

All soluble mineral salts are bad for plants in excess, and chloride ions are particularly bad. If you care about plants close to your path and driveway, or where the run-off goes, you should use any mineral salt to melt snow or ice sparingly.
