You may want to check with your nearest Mexican consulate. There may be
special rules for green card holders. But I'd think he'd need to bring his
passport. And may even need a visa.

My mistake, I wonder why. Is Canada the same?

Actually, one can enter Canada based on permanent residence in the US.
Check out this site and scroll down the page to Visitor Visa Exemptions.

We did this, but my husband's from Switzerland, so he wouldn't have needed a
visa anyway.

Yup, Canada is the same.

VISITOR VISA EXEMPTIONS

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

[...]

* persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence.

Hey, thanks souls! Yes, I checked out all that extra insurance, thanks for the tip.

We'll see. It sounded like fun, but I'm not sure now. I feel safer traveling in the USA for now...but he's mentioned Mexico a few times, so thought I'd look into it.

Best to avoid sightseeing boats.

No problems in Mexico, but I guess like anywhere you have to use your nouse.

I sent an email inquiry to the Mexican Consulate in LA...we'll see if they respond.

If he has to get a visa, it's totally not worth it just for a 3-day trip. Plenty of places yet to see in the USA.

Thanks everyone for all your help.
