I didn't but if I had heard it I would probably agree. I haven't seen the movie but the reports are that it is a load of sentimental nonsense based on somebody's romanticized bastardized version of what actually happened.

That's the one! I thought Barbara Walters made a good point (don't usually like her) but, isn't it about time that we can all see that the twoeys (sp?) took this kid in because he was homeless and not because they thought they were 'doing a service to the black community'? and looking for the fast lane into heaven or whatever

I really don't think that Vanessa Williams did any favors turning it into a black/white issue (JMHO)

Now you're reminding me of FIL, it's a family joke with films, "Is it a true story, like?" which is what he asked after hearing the plot of 'Total Recall'.

Well if you read the Texas Monthly article (I think you have to join though) you'll find that a white male writer from Texas came to a similar conclusion. The movie wasn't even about the boy (Michael Oher) who overcame his almost insurmountable past (albeit with a little help and that is GREAT. Don't we all need a little help as kids?) but rather about a rich white woman who suffered the horror of being snubbed by the junior league. There's nothing wrong with the story but rather the intellectual dishonesty with which it was told.

There's something really irritating about the whole thing. I think it's great that these people helped him. His mother was a crack addict and he was living on the street. The people who watch this movie don't seem to realize that in order to succeed in life most of us require warm houses and safe environments for our entire childhoods, not just a couple of years in high school. The fact that he was able to flourish with such little nurturing is a testimony to him. Also, there's the whole football element ... don't even get me started about what people are willing to do to have a winning team in the South.
