Since I sunburn under a 40 watt bulb, I am apparently the most lily white of all of you. Maybe I shouldn't have married an olive-skinned jewish girl and instead mated with a fellow ginger to preserve my translucent hue.

Hey Roland! I burn and tan too? Can't figure it out for the life to me since I'm an African-American. I know there's some Caucasian blood in me. It must be Irish blood then. Hell I dunno. All I do know is that SPF 45 and me are tight like that.

California size: 160,000 sq mi (411,000 sq km)
UK size: 94,600 sq. mi (245,000 sq km)
So CA is almost twice as big, and has almost half the population.
But in reality, both places have large cities (London, LA, etc) that are high density, and small towns. The real difference is, CA has a lot, lot more space between populated towns. Once you go north past San Francisco (which is about half-way up the state), there are virtually no more large towns, let alone cities. So an area approximately the same size as the UK has virtually no population. And it's gorgeous, too (the wine country, the giant redwoods, etc). I've been here 25 years and I can tell you that CA is VERY large and VERY uncrowded once you get out of the cities.

I've experienced the same thing - people slag off New Jersey when they've only seen Newark. Go out to Hillsborough and you're in God's country. It's beautiful.

California is a naturally hot and dry place.
The North is, granted more lush, but its still friggin hot!
Absolutely, the natural beauty of California is inspiring, no doubt. But as far as the way of life goes, well its like that bowl of granola.

You are correct, California bears zero resemblance to England. England is literally swarming with villages, back roads everywhere, it has a temperate climate, completely different seasides, and much more history.

But anyway, back to population ... both places have small towns/villages as you say. The major difference is the space between them. You can drive 100 miles in CA without seeing a house. You can't drive 20 miles in UK and do that. It's just more spread out in CA.
as for 'way of life' ... that's the one area where CA is, in my mind, far superior ... but this would turn into a different thread so let's just leave it at 'different'.
