Two young women at LAX once asked me what was worn under my kilt.
Pardon me ladies, I said, but everything is in fine working order.

I didn't really live it, just borrowed it for a few weeks, but I was feeling a bit sorry for myself when I went there and things were very quickly put into perspective.
Also, I was a foot taller than everyone else and the wrong colouring altogether. Stood out just a fraction.

I'm 5 feet nothing.....and I was taller than most....including men...Amazingly good feeling!

One that sticks in my mind was driving through an ice storm in the middle of nowhere Kansas on a work related trip. I clearly remember thinking: HTF did I get here.

Definitely better to think of it as "moving forwards" to a new place (that may happen to be somewhere that you have lived in the past).

I get those HTF? moments too, though less often than I used to. They occur when I least expect them, perhaps in a traffic jam, or wandering around Lowes with a cart of timber and plumbing supplies (I didn't do much construction work in the UK, at least not compared to here in the US). The most memorable occasion was when I looked out across the rooftops of the city where I live, from my vantage point sitting astride the roof ridge of a house, hammer and chisel in hand, demolishing the chimneys!
Felling mature trees with a heavy duty chainsaw has sparked several HTF? moments too.![Nod](https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/smilies/nod.gif)

But having returned after 11 years - I've never since felt "at home" here. Though it's where I (try to) "live".
Emigrating in either direction, after time's elapsed, is a tricky thing. You change, places change...and anyone who thinks otherwise - is, I believe, in for a rude awakening.
