My Mum did ask if my husband was going to wear his kilt when we got married.

He should have worn a black and white stripey one.

Two young women at LAX once asked me what was worn under my kilt.

Pardon me ladies, I said, but everything is in fine working order.

One that sticks in my mind was driving through an ice storm in the middle of nowhere Kansas on a work related trip. I clearly remember thinking: HTF did I get here.

It is handy on the crowded buses - air space for breathing.

Yeah, but we don't go "back" home, we go on to home. The UK may not be the same as when we left, but nor are we.

Very true but, unfortunately, not everyone realizes that.

Definitely better to think of it as "moving forwards" to a new place (that may happen to be somewhere that you have lived in the past).

The most memorable occasion was when I looked out across the rooftops of the city where I live, from my vantage point sitting astride the roof ridge of a house, hammer and chisel in hand, demolishing the chimneys!

Felling mature trees with a heavy duty chainsaw has sparked several HTF? moments too.
Its the mundane things for me too, often driving home. I look around, and I think, this is America and I live here, how the hell did that happen? I had no American dream, and despite being a big traveler, I had only spent one day in America not in connection to my relationship.

Me too...difference being I'm from here originally
But having returned after 11 years - I've never since felt "at home" here. Though it's where I (try to) "live".

Emigrating in either direction, after time's elapsed, is a tricky thing. You change, places change...and anyone who thinks otherwise - is, I believe, in for a rude awakening.
