I will suggest to moderators to move your thread to the US part of the forum, for better responses. (BTW I am from UK. and have lived in Florida almost 20 years)

I think at some point everyone has a bout of homesickness. North Carolina is a good place to live in the USA. Right now its demographics are changing due to a large population increase of people moving there from the North Eastern States (NY, NJ, PA, Connecticut, Vermont New Hampshire, Massachussets, etc) Good Luck.

The first two years I was here, I would have jumped at the chance to go back. Now, after 20+ years here, no chance. We have lived in 3 different areas, and I liked the last two, and hated the first, so that may have had something to do with it. We do go and visit family about every couple of years, or they come to visit us. Just give it a bit of time (a year+) so you can settle in a bit more and get the lay of the land.

Well it is unusually hot this year, here and in UK and elsewhere. I am not sure NC gets cold like UK but it is possible, There is a BE expert that lives in NC, I expect they will chime in with some advice soon. .... (BTW I am from UK. and have lived in Florida almost 20 years)

Similar to RICH, I have been here in NC for about 20 years, after a brief attempt to settle in New York, and an even shorter stopover in Virginia where my in-laws were living at the time.
The weather here IMO, in my area (the Charlotte end of the state) has been quite moderate this year, actually cooler than some years. Some years we long periods of daily highs in the mid-high 90's and some days over 100ºF, but this year it's been highs in the 90's and some in the 80's, and the temperatures stayed quite low (we didn't use the AC much) until late in May too, which is the latest in the year, that it has stayed that cool since I came to live in NC.
On the coldness side of the discussion, it can certainly get very cold here, by UK standards - down to around 10ºF-15ºF (-9ºC to -12ºC), but only usually for a few days at a stretch, then its back to milder weather. The pattern of snow fall is very similar to much of the UK or England at least, with snow rarely being an inch or two, and some years there is no snow, but unlike the UK the sun gets warm enough that any snow usually thaws same day or next day. And like the UK, NC drivers are terrible in the snow, with many thinking that driving a 4x4 means they can drive in the snow (it doesn't), so it's best to stay home if there is snow on the roads. Up in the NC mountains it can be colder and colder for longer - there is even a ski resport up there, but some years even that gets very little snow.

I love it here, but I am very financially driven/motivated. Im paid what I am worth, perhaps more, live an incredible life, and have found a spot I can tolerate away from some of the mad locals.
I complain a lot about the US, but IMO the UK is a lot worse.
To OP, what drives you? What do you miss about UK? What do you love about here?

Very true, and I try not to trivialize home sickness. I have never felt it, I just have a 'ive made a decision so lets look forward', but, that isnt for everyone

From: from Yorkshire, via Hampshire and Surrey to NC Triangle

Been in the NC Triangle for 15 years now. The people are different, the culture is different, but I’ve made some good friends here. It takes a while, and most are through my former work, or my hobbies that I met through joining a few clubs. Just one from my daughter’s school gate (she’s now 23) A few really great neighbors.
It’s hot right now, the trick is to be in the shade where you can and get your outside things done when there’s low humidity and at the coolest parts of the day. Eventually you’ll acclimatize if you spend time outside and don’t crank your AC too hard. At least we found that helps.
Thankfully we have AC practically everywhere unlike the UK which seems to have a meltdown every time it’s over 75f, which is starting to happen more and more, even oop North where I’m from.
I wish you the best of luck. It’s a funny thing moving away from our normal.
We’ve hit the stage where we have things we favor in each country, and we’re lucky that we get to visit the UK at least once a year.
