Humbugs...now you're talking - they were always good. Never see them these days....Dad always used to get big tin of them at Christmas from some old fashioned sweetmaker in York or Harrogate or somewhere like that. That tin stayed in the car along with a sweetshop sized jar of Sharps Extra Strong mints that seemed like it lasted all year.....

They used to all clump together in the tin and he had to knock it hard against the handbrake to dislodge one....

Brings back memories. At least they weren't in a paper bag that would tear each time you tried to take one out.

Yeah - WTF was that about? Surely that should be classed as child abuse...

And then stick to the sweet so you ended up with that unchewable bit of soggy paper at the end...

Then you ended up with sticky finger marks on the vinyl seats in the Datsun.

If winter is defined as the coldest season (and Dec 1st is a bit of a made up rough date) the solstice is the point in the middle of the system that makes everything cold. Again ignoring seasonal lag (which when considered pushes it forward somewhat to the Jan date you mention).

Makes more sense to be in January anyway, since the coldest weather is usually later than Dec 21st anyway but we weren't exactly dealing with the most scientifically minded people when these conventions were first adopted.

Interestingly, and rather off topic, but the Earth is actually slightly closer to the sun during the (northern) winter than during the summer, it is just the axial tilt that points 'away' from the sun as it were.

So now you can tell everyone - the Earth's axial tilt is the true 'reason for the season'

A40 was black - to match my mums mood every time she had to drive it....
My best buddy used to take the mick out of it - and they had a Morris Marina. A green one ffs. Mum was so traumatized that when she sold it, she never drove again, and has spent the last 40 years walking and using the bus!
