I must admit, based on the lack of solid evidence, I'm sympathetic.

Much in the way of extradition is speculation at this point.

I've already provided the link to a copy of the treaty.

I agree that "double jeopardy" does not expressly apply in this case.

Do note that the case will have to go to a magistrate and then the magistrate's order is subject to habeas corpus review, and then circuit court of appeals.

Much in the way of US extradition law involves non-US citizens. I can envision Ms. Knox vigorously contesting extradition and there is a rubric of "bad facts make bad law" -- and that rubric may apply here.

I don't find the facts of the alibi to be weird at all -- it is almost a tradition for young American women to go to France or Italy and have a torrid sexual affair with a handsome Frenchman or Italian. I know of several 60 something women who speak wistfully of that time in their lives.

Born in Southwark, South London on 28 December 1985
Since then lived most of her life in Coulsdon, Surrey

Known to her friends as "Mez"

Her Dad - a freelance journalist - British
Her Mum - a housewife - Indian

Education: Old Palace School, Croydon University of Leeds - European politics and Italian -

- a fluent Italian speaker and lover of all things Italian

She chose the University of Perugia, in Italy of course, in which to spend a year studying Italian, modern Italian history and Italian politics

Very adept in karate, which she followed since age 17 - she was very petite in stature so her interest in karate is understood.

She worked hard as a barmaid to support herself through university

Her ambition following graduation was to work for the European Union Commission in the field of journalism.

Fellow students found Meredith to be very caring, extremely intelligent, very witty with a good sense of humour - and universally popular and well liked all round...sounds like a really lovely girl.

Physically she was very attractive......in the opinions of many - more so than her supposed friend - the American Amanda Knox.

From all of the photographs I have seen of both the poor ill fated Meredith and the now very controversial Amanda Knox - I would very much agree with that.

Make what you will out of that.

Many people here in the UK believe that Knox really and truly was playing to the camera big time during that US TV interview with that female journalist holding her hand so very "reassuringly sympathetically" throughout, with tears dead on cue.

The banner headline in one to today's (Sat 01 Feb 14) UK national newspapers:

Shameless in Seattle

If Raffaele Sollecito ends up in that Italian jail once again while Knox continues to remain free and languishing safe and sound and secure in her American pad courtesy of the double standards of the "Double Jeopardy" US State Department then that indeed really would be a travesty of justice, no mistake!

While the state dept does make the final determination, they cannot just send someone to a foreign country. A federal judge first has to determine if the charge is covered by the treaty, and that there is sufficient evidence to sustain the charge.

If federal courts decide she can't be extradited, not sure the government can do much.

Its not soley in the hands of the State Department.

Meredith Kercher was a young Erasmus Scholar who was brutually murdered in Perugia Italy in November 2007.

My interest in the case is from the aura surrounding the murder and prosecution. It strikes me that the aura involves religious feelings -- and one cannot really argue when matters of faith get involved.

Many people have taken on the faith that American student Amanda Knox was there and took part in the murder. The debate on the issues seem to be between those of faith and those of a more secular bent.

From what I have read the Administration is not worried, they will be long gone before it becomes an issue.

Despite the thread title and the statement that you replied to. Nobody here really cares about her, none of us knew her. Just like thousands of other murder victims, we have no need to know about their karate achievements.

However this is more an Entertainment than News issue, and looking at it from that perspective the back story helps.

I don't think Knox did it, but Mr Folinskys mention of faith is a related issue for me, as I am constantly wanting to know the power of my peers on my judgment here. Some of you may remember that Knoxs mums house is a block away from mine, and one of my child's teachers taught Knox when she was at the school. So while it is not everyday conversation, whenever it is raised people are sympathetic to Knox. And I do struggle to separate my logical thoughts from the peer support sometimes. I also think it interesting that for this instance I am so aware of that influence.

"Meredith was a nice girl, therefore the American must have killed her" is not a particularly compelling argument.

Most likely, the american girl in the room had nothing to do with the dead English girl, right?
