It sounds like the reporter who wrote that article is not well informed about check printing software, as it sounds like they they think he home-brewed something to create a fake check whereas he probably just used check printing software and blank check stock paper to print a very authentic looking check.

We have no idea really what that reporter is well informed about. I read both articles and all it says is he printed them at home on his computer. The part about jewellers being smarter than Porsche dealers I would agree with, just based on the jewellers and car salesmen I know.
