So what would you recommend as a sturdy machine for regular home use? I grew up using my mum's Kenwood Chef Major and, in due course, would like something with similar capabilities.

America's Test Kitchen (PBS) did a mixer comparison on their weekly show yesterday (could be a rerun) and it made me think of this thread. You can probably find the video online. Basically they ran all them through gauntlet --- compared the major brands and KitchenAid won. Both models, the more expensive and the one that is a couple hundred dollars less, were better than the others.

FWIW - for serious home cooks, America's Test Kitchen is a good tool. I don't bake much so generally ignore the bread/pastry pieces --- however, on the stuff that interests me, they've never let me down.

I'd go with a Kenwood over a Kitchenaid anyday personally, they seem to last much better and just be better made. I don't know what options you've got in the U.S., but if you do want to go for the trendiness of a Kitchen Aid I'd choose the pro one only (although it lasted 18 months for me before dying - conveniently past the paltry 1 yr guarantee, but I do use my mixer a lot more than most 'normal' people!).

My Kenwood (also a Chef Major) has now lasted 5 years and is still going strong.

HTH.

i have a Kenwood that must be almost 20 years old now. Bulky but works perfectly. I also have a kitchen aid hand mixer which am very happy with as a quick beater. If you buy a kitchen aid rom Lakeland it has a lifetime guarantee. i bought a remoska from Lakeland (posted to Italy from UK), it died and they sent me a new one with no questions asked and no postage to pay !

I have a $6 electric hand mixer from the Dollar Store. I've had it about 18 years and its still working well. Four weeks ago it mixed up two Christmas Cakes, today it helped me make a Gingerbread cake and 24 chocolate cranberry muffins.

I'm not an adventurous cook but I like to bake cakes, pastries and breads most weeks and my faithful little mixer hasn't let me down yet!

With inflation I did notice the same mixer is now $10

Cashbackholic

are 2 very good portal searchers.

Also consider ruling the cost of the currency you are using to pay. Gift Card Granny is a good search site for gift card purchases from reputable resellers.

For Kohl's (or many others) in-store purchases, if you have a Discover Card and an iPhone 6 then Discover are offering an additional 10% cashback (so their regular 1% + 10% bonus = 11%) for using Apple Pay before the end of the year. Discover is also offering new cardholders doubling their cashback at the end of their first year, so would effectively be 22% off before applying all of the other Kohl's discounts and other bollocks.
Great advice. My husband says that a Discover Card can only be held by a US citizen, not Perm resident. Small print?

Shouldn't you have a big ol Hobart machine for a business?

We used to have a $5 only store, but it didn't go over to well and they switched back to 1.25 store.

The 1.25 only stores are all useless crap, Dollaramma (Canadian only) is better, and have some name brand stuff as well, price point from 1.00 to 3.50 I think now. Can't make money off 1.00 or 1.25 only items anymore here.

Never seen a $6 or $5 store in the US, 99 cent only store seems to be the main chain in So. California, not sure about the rest of the country.

Ok smart ass's, It is called The Dollar Store because everything is a dollar amount, $1, $2, $3, $4, .......etc. The town I work in also has Family Dollar, King Dollar and Dollar Tree as well as the 99 cent Store.

Indeed. Why would anybody buy a domestic appliance to use in a commercial business?

Googling /commercial stand mixer/ produces a list of heavy duty appliances, including Hobart and several other brands.

Same with vacuums, some hotels I have worked in the owners are too cheap for their own good, and buy household vacuums from Wal-mart and then act surprised when they break after a year. They are designed to be used like 2 or 3 times a week, not 15-20 times a day..

Never judge the quality of a household product based on it's use in a commercial setting.

My mum has a Kenwood that she got as a wedding gift in 1968. I remember it being used several times a week. It only gets an outing maybe once or twice a month now, but it's still going strong!

I, on the other hand, have a KitchenAid. Left my Pro in the custody of my sister and I've bought a replacement for here.
