A lot of time thoses tests are just a means of weeding out potential pains in the ass.

I know, it's really frustrating. He is almost done with his Bachelors, I think he has about 6 credit hours left to finish up, but because of him always getting deployed or changing bases etc, it's been difficult for him to be in class. By the time he gets it done I told him he will need to get his phd, don't think the BA will be of much use now!

I'm not complaining, I realise how lucky we are too even have a steady income, but it is annoying that education is preferred over experience. I can understand it in jobs that are more specialized and need a modern up to date education in that specialty, but when hubby changed career fields he did a training school and had to pass exams to get the job.

Looks like it worked then!

Seriously, though, how does that work? Say somebody will spend a whole day doing thousands of silly schoolboy problems, in the hope of getting an interview. What does that demonstrate? *

*Apart from poor time management. I got eight job applications in, in the time I could have spent doing those tests.

Desperation? Which can sometimes be a good quality to have in an employee.

I got approval to hire an IT guy recently; we posted an ad on Dice, and our recruiter did some preliminary screening. I interviewed 4 potential candidates this week (1 hr each), liked two of them, decided on one of them, spoke to my boss for about 10 minutes on the topic and got the go-ahead, then offered the guy the job at the upper limit of his desired salary range. Working in a small company has its advantages ...
