Default IRS/UK Tax combined????!!

Hi,

I moved to New York from London in January 2007. After about a year and a half i will be returning to the UK (August) as i have decided to change company. I'm a UK national and currently living here on an E-2 visa.

My question regards tax. I filed my US taxes with the IRS on 25th Feb '08 for the previous 12 months and due to my non-resident status got a healthy cheque. I'm now told though that upon returning to the UK i can expect the IRS to chase me for a tax return next year (even though i'll be back in London). I'm also told they can way claim to my UK and US earnings. Was i being naive in thinking i'd pay US taxes whilst here and then just UK taxes in the UK (straight from my UK pay slips).

I was hoping to just pay the IRS whatever i owed them from April-Aug 08. But will i owe them more?

Please advise as one of my colleagues says there may be a loop hole.

Nick
