If he likes his videos, make sure the device of choice can play all the codecs, containers and subtitle files that he is likely to use; whether they be mkv, vob, srt etc. (This is more of an accusing finger pointed towards the iPad)

No one likes re-encoding; and most will not do it.

I am looking to buy him a super duper gift for his birthday in May and knowing he loves his computers, pc - laptop, I thought an ipad3 would be the way to go but then I looked into the other ereaders which have expanded to internet usage, movie streaming, etc.

If you had your choice, and wanted something that can access the web, downloads ebooks, plays games, etc., which would you choose?
I asked a somewhat similar question here about a month ago (look up 'let's pretend' in my posts) and got lots of good info.

I already had an Ereader (I never actually used it to read books) but found I used it a LOT for surfing the web, jumping on and off to check email, Facebook etc without powering up the desktop. Anyhow I decided to get something nicer and seriously considered the Samsung Galaxy and IPad 3. I spent a long time looking into both and in the end opted to get the iPad 3, I have to say I Love it and do not regret buying it all.

Then the only correct gift will be the one he picks out. Ask him what he wants, he probably knows exactly which one.

Be warned that they do go up into the high hundreds of dollars.

Why is that? You need music to use the ipad?

I've checked out the prices and not a problem.

Won't ask him because he would never spend the money for something like that. I can wiggle an answer or two from him but never get him to say this is what I want.

That's what the guy was doing who I saw in the supermarket last week! (Not that my supermarket has those.)

To answer the OP, I concur with the others who suggested the IPad3. I would love to receive one as a gift.

Just a correction - there's no such thing as an iPad 3!!!

The latest incarnation is the new iPad.

There isn't? Why is everyone referring to it as the IPad3?
