Default Internet - how much $$?

I should do a better job of monitoring utility bills. But I just looked at our spectrum account, just basic internet service only, and was aghast to find we are paying $79.99 per month. (We switched to Spectrum from Verizon a couple of years ago, and I thought it was about $40 per month, but I could be misremembering.)

How much do other folks pay?

Mine is bundled in with my tv. Just shy of $200. I’ve looked at cutting cable, but if we did, we’d either lose a lot speed and data, or we’d save only about $30 or $40 a month. 2 kids, and we do a heck of a lot of streaming, so we are heavy monthly users.

Default Re: Internet - how much $$?

I have different setups in different properties, all monthly including tax’s:

1. 100/100 fios fiber, preferred TV, DVR, HBO and a showtime - $88 - 5 year bulk deal on a multi unit property.

2. 200/35 cable internet - $45 “price for life” with modem I brought for $50

3.150/150 Fiber to the house with included modem. - $50 - this is a local provider called GoNetSpeed.
Backup line- 70/6 DSL internet with a modem/router I had to buy from phone company for $200, but I had them credit me 5 free months to offset the cost - $34.99
I canceled the one below once I got fiber as my primary.
200/35 cable internet - brought my own modem for $50. - $45 price for life

the only way to keep prices down is to get the “price for life” deals or have multiple options so you can leave one to get the new sign up deal.

find streaming is much better for TV, especially if you have multiple properties so you can use it in both places. I use sling TV which is about $40 a month for the regular cable channels.

and for “landlines” MagicJack works out about $5 a month as a backup in case cell service was down.

Considering Starlink which I think is $100 a month for 150/150 for my backup line.

Comcast Xfinity (or whatever they call it) Internet only, no phone, no TV around $100.00 per month. My wife works from home, so we do get $35.00 or something from her employer towards its cost. We have a 1,229GB month limit. We are usually touch at least close to 1,000GB each month

I'm exactly the same as you, combined bill of $200 for internet and TV (Cox cable). I have to call and haggle with them every year, as these prices are 'specials' that expire after 1 year and jump up. This last time, I had to drop the internet bandwidth from 150 mbps to 50 mbps (down), to keep it under $200, which really pisses me off. Looking at my notes from the last call with them, about $70 of that is for data, the rest for TV. I have only 1 premium channel - HBO, but I do also have 'DVR' service.

I'm there less than 6 months of the year, but they don't have any easy way to stop paying for it. I like to monitor the place when I'm gone (camera, thermostat, leak detectors, etc) so I can't turn off the 'data' anyway. I'm not on any predictable schedule for being there / not there, so it would mean calling them up every other month and re-negotiating the pricing, which I just can't face doing.

I also have Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions, but I don't like either of them enough to be willing to forego the Cox TV package entirely.

In the other place I live, the cable TV and data service is bundled in with the (exorbitant) monthly HOA fees.

Interesting.
I pay Spectrum $18 a month internet only, was $15 3 years ago. Some kind of offer for deprived area. A Rep knocked on my door and sold me! Before that I had WOW and the price was in your range!

On speedtest.net I get 40mbps down/ 5 up at best.
I work from home last 2 years and it is adequate for work +streaming cbsn at the same time on firestick + phone/alexa and home laptop attached at same time.

Only problem is reliability, it drops out completely a couple times a week, usually reboot modem fixes it, and I found if speedtest only shows like 5/1 i can still work.

I am on a vpn for work, which shows about 20/3 on a good day!

Riight before I posted this speednet was giving me 4 down 0.2 up and i rebooted and went back to 40/5

$35 per month (Comcast), of which around $20 is for internet and $14 for modem rental. I think it will go up by $20 after one year.

I pay $99.99 a month to Mediacom for 300/30 with a 2 TB cap, internet only. There's pretty much no other option for me though as we use about 1.5TB of data a month and the other ISPs around here have much smaller caps. It's frustrating as Nashville and Huntsville both have Google Fiber and I'm stuck in between them with pretty much no chance of them ever expanding to my town.

Windstream 10mbps. Sucks, but the only provider out here in the boondocks. When we first moved in to our new build we were getting 0.5mbps (yes that right, 0.5) so can't really complain now.

$75p/m

AT&T internet $70

AT&T TV (just changed their name to Direct TV streaming).

Netflix $10 I think.

Dropped Spectrum cable a few years ago because of price.

Thanks everyone for this interesting information. I think I just wasn’t paying attention, about a year ago we went from the promotional first-year rate to a regular rate, and I was shocked when I saw $79.99. I England we pay £35 to BT for internet + landline phone (just the line, no calls included on the phone.)

One problem is that internet/telecom providers are so annoying to try to contact & deal with, I just avoid engaging with them. Yesterday I repeatedly told Spectrum “I have internet only, no TV.” Their response was, “if you want to reduce the price you’ll have to drop some channels.”
