Importing Canadian vehicle to US
I recently moved to the US after being granted permanent resident
status. I brought my Canadian car but didn't go through the procedure
for importing the vehicle at that time. Now I'm told that I should
have done this when coming across the first time when I inquired about
registering the vehicle in my state. I'm not sure how to handle this
at this point. I can not seem to contact Customs to get any
information. I'm hoping someone can tell me what I need to do to
properly import the vehicle now that it is already here. I'm hoping I
don't need to drive back to the border to take care of this!
Thanks in advance,

Where are you located?
If you are close to North Dakota, you can make contacts through these
numbers and ask for the Vehicle Importation section of CBP.
Phone: (701) 825-6201 ext 740
Fax: (701) 825-6473
If you are not close to that POE, ask the person politely the right contact
number for a POE Customs/import section that is close to where you are
located
You need to have your car properly imported with duties paid or else it
could be subject to fines, penalties or forfeiture.

Re: Importing Canadian vehicle to US
You need to contact the car's manufacturer in Canada (I had to contact GM in Oshawa) and get a letter indicating that the car meets US safety and emissions standards *for its model year*. This will probably run you about $50-$100. With that letter, you go to your local DMV or county clerk's office and have them inspect the car. There will be a $50 or so charge for this... after which you should be able to get new US plates.
It's entirely possible that the DMV or clerk's office will not accept the letter until the car itself is cleared by US customs... and in that case, you will either have to drive to the border to sort it out, or find a US customs house near where you live. There will be no duty fees *if* you can demonstrate that you have owned the vehicle for more than one year. If you've owned it less than a year, be prepared to pay!
