I don't have much call for thermodynamics these days, thankfully. If I dealt with compressors, then maybe, but topsides folk tend to have moved to the dark side.

Me too, ..... and me neither - I struggled enough to get my A level in Physics using metric, but I consider my B grade to be one of my greatest academic achievements.

There's always an easy enough conversion factor to apply.

Yeah, I can see how the concept of a "gallon" and a "quart(er of a gallon)" would be tricky to get your head around if you grew up on the metric system.

I get that it's a quart(er) even though they teach my poor boy to say fourths but I can't visualise a gallon, a gallon of milk sounds like I should be getting it at a petrol station. Now a pint of milk I am ok with or two pints (a rectangle) or 4 pints (the square one) but what have pints got to do with gallons and where do 'cups' come into it?

Eight pints to the gallon. One quart is two pints.

A US pint is 2 cups, or 16 fluid ounces. The cup doesn't exist as a measurement in the UK, and there, one pint is 20 fl oz. I think a UK fluid ounce is a bit bigger too.

A UK pint us 568ml, whereas a US one is 473 so a gallon of milk in the US is a wee bit smaller than eight UK pints (4.5 l approx). A litre is a litre the world over.

Fun, eh?

I always thought it was weird that one of my glass jugs only goes up to 16 fl oz, now I know why
