What I do like is that because of "Megan's Law" one can look up zipcodes to see where the area sex offenders are resident.
However I understand that there are flaws in this; eg. a teenage boy may have been listed for having (consensual) sex with his girlfriend but still gets listed as a sex offender.

Sex offenders have the LOWEST recidivism rate of all crimes, the sex offender registry is a stupid waste of time that does nothing to improve public safety. It's only a feel good thing and something to score political points.

I live in a tiny town here in Maine and there was a double murder about 6 months ago, roughly 20 seconds from my apartment.

Our little leafy town in Western MA is considered very safe. The neighbours still bang on about a burglary that took place over 20 years ago.
Actually next door neighbour did pop over about 6 months ago to warn is of a spate of "break ins" to cars in people's driveways. Finished the tale by saying that because of this she was now going to start locking her car at night... (Turned out to be some kid who was helping themselves to whatever people had left in clear view inside their unlocked cars).

The reason I ask this question is because yesterday, whilst chatting on my cell phone, I missed the turn to SF and ended up in the middle of Oakland ...now there is not much that scares me but OMFG!! I drove for 11miles through the streets and it was full of black folk and Mexicans, now I am not racist but I did not see 1 white face NOT one and had they of all looked pleasant my opinion may of been different but it was flippen scary..the truck went into lock all doors and the baseball hat went on, while I prayed that no one saw a blonde chic and no one rear ended me or I them, as there was no way in hell I was getting out of that truck.........I have seen it on the TV show and now I have lived it the roughest, dirty, scary hole ever, I have been to some poor countrys and seen some things but that was expected, what I saw and felt yesterday was not.
So have you ever been scared in a difficult situation, or is the neighbourhood rough where you are?
Before anyone starts I have many Black and Espanic friends it's just a comment on my observations yesterday

I have an idea on how to reduce that recidivism rate even further:

I love Chris Hansen and what he's doing, but I still think the scissors provide a more effective deterrent.

Frankly, I didn't really realize racism until I moved to LA. After a couple of months there and hearing all the bullshit yak-blah-blah-yak from co-workers it suddenly dawned on me that 2 of my best mates from England hadn't been the same shade of insipid that I was. Took a 6500 mile move to figure out that I had been mingling with the "inferiors".
