Hmmm. Not convinced on that, I was looking at my grocery bill and there is a sub total line for tax @ 8% of the total or so, unless some items are exempt? Maybe county as opposed to state tax, which may be a little odd on such a basic staple? Still its better than 17.5%.

Mind you the property taxes are comparatively steep.

In California, food is not taxed, that is, you do not pay sales tax on grocery items. However, you do pay sales tax on prepared food, which is why you pay sales tax on restaurant food and any prepared food (ie. rotisserie chickens, hot food from the deli, etc.) at grocery stores.
