It is horrible, horrible, horrible. I am ashamed to say that I have been aware of the conflict there, but to read a first person account like that, especially as a woman.

There is part of me that is ashamed to be human.
My first instinct is one of pure hatred and a lust for vicious, violent retribution.
I want to kill them all.
This is simply genocide. A weak Zaghawa being purged by the Janjawid, supported by China because of oil interests.
Those who survive these massacres will join the rebels, and will fight a pyrrhic war of resistance; never having the strength, logistics or material to deal a crushing blow to their enemy.
Villages and communities will continue to be decimated. Agriculture will wither on the vine, and with it, more famine. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, will die. Their fate has been written and sealed by this vile conflict, just through the chance that they were born of the wrong creed in the wrong country.
Because of China's influence nothing will be done. Nothing will be done to stop families being torn apart; nothing will stop the necessity of the child soldiers.
This is not about color. The genocide in Rwanda was allowed to continue because of the fat lip the US and the UN received in Mogadishu.
What is to be done? I don't know. It will play itself out eventually. But at what cost? Being a father, this picture really resonates with me.

This boy is my son's age. There are hundreds of thousands of kids like this, and in the story linked above, suffering through the accidental location of their birth.
What can you do? Give money? Food aid is always used as a weapon by those on the ground. Write to your congressperson? I don't know. But spare a thought for these people tonight.

What would you do in their situation?
Would you take up arms (if you had them) to defend your family?
If you did have the means to defend yourself, would you do so knowing that if you fought off one attack, they would come and eradicate your entire village?
Your friends and neighbors put to the sword? In the clearing of the ghettos in Poland, people did fight back. And the Nazis would come and kill dozens of people for every German soldier killed.
Could you live with yourself, knowing that your actions would result in the deaths of your friends and neighbors?
Should you go quietly into the night?
The answer is to be strong. Peace comes through strength. Weakness will always be exploited. I have posted this quote before, but it still stands;
"Those who beat their swords into ploughshares will plough for those who did not."
Did anyone here belong to CND? If so, please explain your mindset and logic, because I simply can't comprehend how people can think that way.

I knew such atrocities are carried out in Darfur...when I read the article it reminded me very much of the stories I had read about in the former Yugoslavia some years ago. What kind of animals throw a baby into a fire to die...what kind of animals can even kill a baby? What does it say about the rest of the world who are sitting back and allowing this to happen?
Nice to see you back BTW.
