Here is a great read about math in American schools: Why do Americans Stink at Math?
I often got students in my college calculus classes who had "taken calculus" at school. The knew a handful of tricks and hadn't the foggiest about how to use any of it. I would regularly hear "I always thought I was terrible at math, but now it actually makes sense." One such girl cried and had to run outside to call her dad when she got an A on the first midterm! If only time went into teaching instead of turning it into a game/memorisation...
Not to mention d/dx at the start
I was in the 'top set' for maths at school, which was ridiculous, I never even had a clue how to use the slide rule and log tables. In order to start a PGCE, in later life I did maths GCSE at evening classes. The teacher took us through everything in a very straightforward way and I found it simple and even enjoyable.
