Default Homeland Security raid Maternity Hotel

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...urists-n315996

Southern California apartment complexes that doubled as "maternity hotels" for Chinese women who want made-in-America babies were raided early Tuesday, capping an unprecedented federal sting operation, officials said.

NBC News was on the scene as Homeland Security agents swept into The Carlyle, a luxury property in Irvine, California, which housed pregnant women and new moms who allegedly forked over $40,000 to $80,000 to give birth in the United States.
Must be quite big business as I am sure I have seen similar stories in the past.

It's a huge business...... most of the mothers are quite young. They see these children (who are automatically US citizens) as investments so that when child is 21 he/she can sponsor parents/siblings et al to move to the US.

The United States and Canada are the only two "developed" countries, as defined by the International Monetary Fund, that still have unrestricted birthright citizenship laws.

I'm sure NBC Nightly news (last night) aired a story on Russians doing this too.
If I remember correctly when the ladies went for visa processing in Russia, they told them that was their intention and visa still granted

It's perfectly legal to enter the US with the intention of giving birth, as long as you can pay for the medical expenses and will leave the country after the birth.

The rich elite from poor countries do it all the time.

My friends from Egypt do exactly this.
They have a holiday home here in Florida, they visit maybe twice a year for 3 months at a time.
They try to plan their visits to coincide with the birth of their children.
I'm somewhat uncomftable with it, they are sure to get the new born a US passport before they depart.
But, they pay all their medical bills in cash with no drawing on any public support.
Their cost they pay is way up there too.

Not sure I want to take the time, but would be interesting if someone with a mathematical bent would work out the consequences of this.

The number who qualify per annum probably doesn't exceed 10,000 and it's perfectly legal.

Another thought is, what proportion of such newborns with foreign parents actually "take advantage" of their US citizenship years in the future? Presumably at least some of the parents let the US passport expire, and the kid just gets on with his/her life in China (or other foreign country.)

An unknown, I certainly have seen many threads from children who are becoming of age and want to move to the and bring their family with them.

Obviously the is where the complications start arising.

Probably no way of knowing, but I should imagine it would be quite high, for study purposes at least.
