Hiring Casual Day Labor. ...

Re: Hiring Casual Day Labor. ...
I've recently discovered the day worker centre, which appears to be a place where day workers can register. You say what you want doing, how many people, when you want it, and they give you a price. I'm not sure how common these places are, worth a look though.

Re: Hiring Casual Day Labor. ...
My neighbour directed me to a forum where all the neighbours post and I posted for help. Got tons of replies - parents offering their sons. So far I think I will go with that.
Got one gal who has 2 boys (20) that will do it.
I'll use moving help as a back up should they not turn up.
Thanks!

It is done all the time here in New York City suburbs. In fact the various cities, i.e. Mahopac, have designated areas for the illegal immigrants to congregate so that they have bathroom and shelter available while they wait for someone to drive by and hire them.
As a woman, I would not do it unless I had a man along side of me as, right or wrong, the look of the workers is more than a little off-putting. Probably just hard working men with evil intent but still I would not do so alone.

The danger is that whoever you hire comes back later, or tips off deliberately or inadvertently others who come back later, to break in and/ or assault you.

Exactly. Too many reports of assaults and worse for my liking. I have to say when we lived in NJ...on the rare occasions we used a contractor...the contractor was usually American but the workers were South American...they were extremely hard workers and very courteous. Normally they had worked for the same contractor for years.

In my neck of the woods there is an organization (a non profit) that puts people who want to work in touch with people who want to pay. This helps on both sides, as they have a price list that you pay for whatever it is you want. Maybe you have a similar organization in your neck of the woods. (Sounds similar to what Nicki has)

I think that is a danger for anyone you allow into your home. Even licensed tradesmen.
It would be very difficult to point a finger at a specific person unless you can prove they were there or are ratted out by the guilty person.
Shortly after we moved into our current house, we were solicited by a national alarm company. We declined (eventually) but had a nagging thought that they may pass our details to a criminal just because they knew we didn't have a system (at least not from them). We actually went with another company but the thought still lingers...
What I liked about Movinghelp.com was it is managed by U-Haul and the helpers are registered companies. Payment is made online and is only released to the company when the job is completed to your satisfaction.
