Default Help - Playstation 2 won't work

OK this may not seem like a desperate problem but with 13 weeks before dude goes to school here in the armpit of hell I need all the air conditioned indoor options I can get.

Has anyone managed to get their UK PS2 to work on an US NTSC TV ?

We bought the new power lead and even a PAL-NTSC converter but as the converter is 50hz and the new TV is 60hz it doesn't work. I'll take any suggestions - feel free to PM me if the solution is not supported by Sony who say it can't be done. Dont want to get any of you into trouble.

I had the same problem with an American Playstation in England. I was told that there was a chip inside that had to be replaced in order to get it to work. I couldn't be botherd so I just went out and got an English Playstation. I have seen used PS2's selling for about $50 at my local pawn shops.

On behalf of your kids, I will offer the best possible advice: buy a new PS3 or Nintendo WII for them.

But if that is not an option, if the TV is a flat panel you might go into the menu settings and be able to switch it to accepting PAL signals. You could also look around your computer monitors to see if one of them can accept rca inputs as many flat panel computer monitors can be adjusted. Otherwise I think you need to look for a mod chip that you can solder inside the PS2 to make it work.

There is also a reported problem with online connectivity as UK playstations look for UK/EU servers.

Hi penguin 6 - bought a wii from H.E.B. last week - and we have only been here a week. Dude has 50+ PS2 Games including his beloved Guitar Hero III thats only a couple of months old and he doesn't want to part with it. My only other option is for hubby to cart the whole lot back to blighty next trip and flog the lot. However we took all the games in a CD case to save space and all the PS2 game boxes are in the shipment (6-8 long weeks away......):curse:

And i can't get this flipping pc to do a @ character on it's keyboard it makes me hit SHIFT 2.

I think I am geting technology rage.

On many PCs you can set the input type for the keyboard to 'UK' so things will be in the same place where you are used to seeing them. Of course the actual keyboard will be a bit off but you can pop the keys and move them around or just put some tape over them (if you are a look down typer).

In most malls in America is a store called Game Stop and you can find used PS2 games there (US versions) for next to nothing. You might seriously consider swapping out the old ones for new ones. With the exchange rate it might all work out as a profit.

mod chip you can get online, from far away dodgy places...it's illegal to buy and install in the US though...but if you've a soldering iron and look online over in HK for instance, you might find what your looking for.

HP screen from old pc system arrives tomorrow in air freight - does anyone know if it will work. It is dual voltage and we think it has a tuner.

Please someone give me hope.

You are hitting the fundamental problem of getting a PAL signal onto a US TV.

In most instances (but not all), a PAL output will display on a NTSC TV, but the picture will be black and white.

If the PC you have has a PAL tuner, it will work (but remember to change the 220 switch on the PC power supply to 110 V), them you can play it on the PC.

The other way to do it is to get a 110v to 220v step up transformer for the Playstation, then also get yourself a UK TV (if you brought one over with you) and plug that into the same transformer and it should work. Or if you dont have a UK TV you will need a multi-standard TV (one that accepts PAL and NTSC, but theres very few of those over in the US, most would need to be sourced from a specialist retailer.
