Talbots is another good place-website, maybe a store near you? Simple, classy dress that my matron of honor bought for DH and my wedding on sale at Talbots.

They should do. We went to a wedding a couple of years ago and I got a lovely lilac suit at Stein Mart. I've only worn it the once but still have it hanging in my closest because I can't part with it. It's so cute. Just waiting for another wedding invite so I can wear it

Re: Help needed buying an outfit
I need to buy an outfit for a wedding. I'm not Mother of the bride, but Bride's father's wife (as he prefers to call me, rather than step-mum!)
Do any stores have personal shopper type people? Can anyone recommend a store for me to go to?
I've tried Dillards and Macys in the past, but could do with advice from anyone in the know.
PS. I hate clothes shopping, so if I can go in, try on and run, I'd be happy!

The wedding is in the UK JG, so evening gowns, black and/or dark colours with sequins etc., won't look right! I don't want to be mistaken for an aging Goth!

In that case I would wait and buy something in the UK if you have time before the wedding. There again I can never buy enough clothes when I'm in the UK...or have enough suitcases to bring them back.

I'd rather not leave it to the last minute if I'm honest. We're going to be so busy when we first arrive, with only a couple of days to spare where we'll no doubt end up visiting, so dress / outfit shopping isn't on the agenda.
Besides, it'll be nice having something I know no-one else will have!

You could always try Coldwater Creek, you can shop on line there and they'll send you coupons to use as well...they have some really nice things, not bad prices in their sales and if you do go into one of their shops, they like to wiat on you hand and foot...

You'll fit right in and be almost invisible.

Oh...and a couple others, but Banana Republic has a few nice summer dresses that are a little more dressy than office wear.
Aldo Accessories is a good place to get accessories to go with the outfits like a hat or belt for not to much money...and Aldo for the shoes, some nice strappy numbers to be had.
Talking shoes, Clarkes have some nice little comfy but smart flats that are quite funky too.
Zara had some nice summer coats on sale but the dresses were more office wear than dinner wear.
I'll now go and hide in shame

Quite possibly yes. Steinmart has a section at the front of the store (can't remember what it's called) with dressier/higher priced items. That being said, still far less $$ than Nordstrom's.
