The "Gun Madness" Continues.........

Re: The "Gun Madness" Continues.........
Hysterical fascists? The only hysteria I see is coming from those engaged in an orgy of hand-wringing, wailing and lamentation. Piers Morgan is a ****ing idiot. I'll make a deal with you. I'll give up my guns when Bloomberg gives up his heavily armed security detail. Ditto Obama and the Secret Service. And all the myriad police and law enforcement agencies. Deal? You guys start.

What are you actually envisioning? The Secret Service coming to get to? To what end? What do people who think like you think that your own government is actually going to do to you? A police-led coup d'etat, you and your buddies marching against them? What about the army and air force - fancy your chances against them? Sorry mate, but this country is in the hands of the oligarchy, they don't need armed cops to keep anyone down, it's all well under control already and is a very prosperous business, for some.

If you are really so paranoid that you think there are as many people out there who would like to see the downfall of OF as there are that would like to have a pop at Obama, then you need help. And not the sort that comes from a gun.

This is such a polarizing topic, that if a referendum were held, it would surely have the highest turnout of any vote in recent history. It would give a true take on the mood of the nation, whichever way it went.
I suspect this would get as much NRA opposition as any mention of introducing new gun control laws though, as they would have the most to lose - their win would only maintain status quo, whereas a gun control win would severely weaken their ability to fight any new legislation, and actually give some Senators some badly needed balls.

I like that idea....we were talking about the same thing last night, but decided the US didn't "do" referendums because we couldn't remember any, or even any talk of them. Is there a historical precedent?

In the age of the interactive web, social media etc., it seems to me that the idea of a formal referendum would be a breath of fresh air. Actually restrict one person to one vote.. rather than the infinite number of votes that the "motivated" or the "angry" now get by clicking buttons or writing intemperate comments..

They are. They have, in fact. It's childish to keep screaming "but I don't want to give up my guns" when people are dying. How much more evidence is needed that something just has to change.
