Default Gordon Brown for PM?

With all the disagreement over Tony Blair's departure, what do you think about Gordon Brown assuming he is going to become PM as if it were some automatic right? I personally think he is an underhanded power freak, so I dread him becoming PM.

So there......

well, i don't know... he was basically promised it by Blair, so not so sure it was an assumption rather than a promise.

You cant promise someone the PMship...funny thing is the UK is still a democracy which means that any PM has to be democratically elected....in the event of a PM stepping down mid-term that requires a leadership vote from the party.

Now rigging the leadership vote is a different matter of course.

Doesn't have to be democratic - the parameters can be set by the party

Or used to be - I'm probably out of date

Labour's very own rules explained:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/5177180.stm

The decision lies with an electoral college split equally three ways between the 354 Labour MPs, all party members and anybody belonging to affiliated trade unions.

Therefore it is likely that up to a million people will have a say in the leadership race.

I doubt he will get PM easily - there will be a proper bitter row I reckon. Still probably better than Blair - really smarmy slippery character - my opionion of him went right down hill after the previous general election.

yes, i know.
I just mean it wasn't just that HE thought it, it was thrown about before, and backing by Blair would have been promised, at least.

When the Grinning Git was elected way back when I swore I'd never go back to live in the UK while he was still in office. Looks like I can start planning my return

Hope (if he gets there) he makes a better PM than he does a local MP. He was our local MP when we lived in Scotland and to be honest he was pretty fliipin useless

Sounds like an excellent candidate for leader of the Labour Party.
