golden syrup sub?
OK guys.... I have a brilliant cake recipe that calls for golden syrup. Can't find it anywhere and need to bake daughter's birthday cake NOW!
In my cupboard I have honey, molasses, maple syrup and Karo corn syrup. Which would be the best substitute?

I'd go with the molasses, but it will affect the colour and give a flavour of brown sugar.
Apparently World Market sells Lyle's Golden Syrup, as does Walmart if they have an international section with British groceries. I am fairly certain I have seen it in our local Kroger-owned grocery too.

Re: golden syrup sub?
Woohoo! I used the karo and it looks ok.
I have to substitute GF flour and I find that making other subs as well can spell disaster...
We are just about to decorate the cake with chocolate icing and a horse which big sister will be doing. Will post a photo. Thanks guys.
I know, just know that I had some golden syrup but it is not where it should be.

I have a nice stash at the moment thanks to some recent visitors but I've used this method and it works if you have time of course

Strange. I'm pretty sure ours comes from HEB, but from their website it looks like they now only stock it in very few stores.

I'd go to Central Market but every time I go in there I see all these other nice things and it costs me a fortune!

Don't have the link but when I was googling for you, I saw there was a youtube video on how to make your own golden syrup.

Success!
Very happy daughter, thrilled with the cake and the icing! Credit goes to Big Sister for the icing. Thanks lizzq.
