First meal
OK, so I am not going back to the UK, but, there are things that I miss, including the food. When you go back, or get back to the UK, what would be your first meal, assuming you had free rein to eat whatever you wanted? I have a little list in the back of my mind, of what I would want to eat, if I went back to the UK for a visit, and am curious to know what others would make a beeline for.
Mine, for the record, would have to be a steak and kidney pie and chips, smothered in HP sauce, from a proper chippy, preferably the chippy in Exening, nr. Newmarket... then, for afters, sticky toffee pudding, or jam roly poly with custard. Sooo, what do you all have on your list? |
Re: First meal
My first meal when I go back is ALWAYS fish'n'chips. And if I couldn't have fish'n'chips, I'd have bangers and mash.

Re: First meal
I've already planned it for when we go back (in 6 weeks!!)
Proper chip shop fish and chips first (from the local Chinese chippy;)). Then a proper curry/balti. Not both on the same day of course  Then I'll probably not want either one for ages - just need to have the taste...:D |

Re: First meal
I actually had a vivid dream about mushy peas, chips and gravy last night. I mean I could taste it and woke up gutted at 3am. There was tons of vinigar, the gravy was thick enough to build with and I was wolfing it with a shitty little blue plastic fork.
First stop for me? The Blue Chippy in Picadilly gardens, Manchester!!! Then a kebab shop. Then to a pub. Then to me mams for lumpy mash and Daddies brown sauce with four rounds of lightly buttered warbies bread. Then several more pubs. |

Re: First meal
Last time I stayed at my sister's in East Finchley we had an amazing take-out vegetarian curry - I haven't found anything even close to it here and we have at least 4 Indian restaurants in SB. The other thing I always eat lots of when I'm over there are cherry almond tarts from M&S - mmmmmmmm. Oh - and cream - it is a mystery what they do to cream here that it is so tasteless. New potatoes with butter and mint sauce. Cod, chips and mushy peas from a pub called the Waterfall on the IOM. I'm getting hungry just thinking about all this food.

Ha! That's aged you (about the same as me I reckon ;)). That was my fave TV prog when I was a child, after school. Just can't remember what it was called? Oh, just did - "Diff'rent Strokes" wasn't it? Fab:D
Yeah, Different Strokes lol. I can't help feeling now though that it was somehow inherently racist. Or am I being too PC and liberal here? It seems like a couple of very corny black stereotypes living with a beneficial white multi-millionaire who didn't try to sexually abuse them in anyway. I dunno, I haven't seen it for years but I just remember the kid and that terrible line with his lip sticking out - wha u tawkin bout willus?!?!?? Seems wrong somehow in these enlightened days - off topic I know but....opinions? |

Re: First meal
I'm beginning to think I'm a little modest in my ambitions, re food I would like if and when I get a chance to visit the UK. I guess I would be better pushing the boat out and booking two seats for myself and stomach on the way back to the US because I'd forgotten about 'real' cadburys chocolate and not the green-worm infested US imitation (anyone interested in hearing that story better have a strong stomach:eek:), the gooey french cheese, and kebabs.

Re: First meal
I didnt know the Exning chippie was good value, geeandtee! I will give it a try next time I am home (just down the road in Cambridge but have a friend in Exning).
For me, a half decent ploughmans lunch with real cheese (not the plastic cr*p that passes for cheese here) preferably Stilton from any pub that happens to be en route. Then real bangers from the village butcher, with mash. Somewhere along the line there should be a real devonshire tea too but I dont want to go overboard on the first day. |
