I think one should just do what feels right...whether it's crying or smiling. :)

Edit to Add: My dad's sense of humor was great. He always warned mom that he wanted to be "on top of her" even after death (to which she would roll her eyes and shake her head). Since mom passed away first, her casket was put up in the vault first. On the day they were putting dad's urn of ashes into the vault where mom's casket was, they first set the urn to the side of the casket. My sister and I looked at each other and then at the same time say "excuse me, is there enough room to put the urn on TOP of the casket?" Yes, there was, and after some weird looks from the workers there, they obliged. So Dad, you got your wish. Sorry Mom. LOL Rene
It is those special family jokes that brings some warmth to a painful process. My Dad suffered awfully from stomach ulcers and back then only treatment was to surgically remove those parts of the stomach. His diet had to consist of bland foods after that, but one food he seemed to crave consistently was cabbage. I recall cabbage on the plate very frequently as a teen, and had joked with my father that the day he dies, I will not bring him flowers - but a cabbage. I recall him hooting at that and as promised, he has a beautiful decorative cabbage growing in a container on top of his grave. Lovely cousins back in Wales ensure said cabbage is cared for. :D |

My wife wanted a celebration of her life. She made friends easily, the church was full to overflowing. Instead of the standard urn, we had her ashes in a flowery china box, a country cottage with the roof being the lid, Kay was known for her gardens. My daughter told of the time when my mum bought some Royal Doulton in our pattern, from them at a promotion, to be shipped to us here. After six months of no news, let alone, arrival. Kay sent them a letter accusing them of using the money as "float". It really was a celebration of her life.
