Surprisingly the Mormon church has been very apolitical for a long time and hasn't been politically vocal like the Evangelical movement, the Catholic church, and some other religious organizations.

Although Utah is a politically conservative state with the vast majority of the politicians belonging to the Mormon church, I can't remember the last time that the Mormon church has been politically vocal about issues or supported one political candidate over another.

The Mormon "church" was one of the biggest opponents in the California Prop 8 fight.

True, but the leadership of the LDS Church is also very pragmatic and is capable of changing church "doctrine" at very short notice when it suits them.

Might be nice if other religions could rewrite doctrine at the drop of a hat.
Mind you it defeats the purpose of doctrine.

The new pope appears to want to deemphasize the catholic church's political role in traditional church's values and emphasize less traditional values so he wants followers to be less political in some areas and more political in other areas.

The world is moving forward, slowly, one day at a time. It's good to see it happen in Utah, one of the last places I'd have expected to get some sanity.

I wouldn't say sanity has prevailed there as the state is still against gay marriage and likely going to appeal the decision.

From what I read the same judge has said marriages won't be stopped during the appeal.
