Thruppence ha'penny. Those were the days. Sums were fun. If you buy 1lb 5 oz of nuts at thruppence ha'penny an ounce, how much would you have left if you had two sixpences, a florin, and three half-crowns in your pocket?

I can`t divulge what culinery habits overseas people get upto in France but I can in Spain.

What happens is this, a certain lets say not very adventurous Brit arrives here and decides, that they are not going to eat any suspect foreign food so they play it safe and go Chinese. Deciding factors also are the fact its the cheapest food you can eat in a restauarant here, its also the worst but that`s besides the point, especially when the smart owner is supplying you with cheap booze all night.

You`ve completely stumped me on the Chinese puzzle..........I`ll come quietly now guv, I swear.

Ahem, on another thread Joules, you had been captured, you were going to come quietly and you were going to divulge that recipe for paella.

If I was going to cook it, it would include: Rice, rabbit, chicken, olive oil, water, alcachofas, azafran, garrofon, green beans, pimenton, tomatoes .

You`ll have to look up the non english words as I don`t know what they are in English (forgotten)

Yikes, yes! I can remember. They were red, yes? A ten bob note? Riches beyond compare!

Mind you, being very ancient I can remember a penny being enough to take to the sweet shop. They were big, too!

Come to think of it, I can remember rationing. I had to take my coupons to the sweet shop. But I was very, very young then.

I cannot remember rationing. I do remember four Fruit Salads or Black Jacks for a penny, which was way more important.

Some rationing went on for a lot longer than people think. Sugar rationing continued into the 1950s.

I have a long memory, and I was very, very young when I was going off with my sister to the sweet shop, clutching my little coupon.

I don't remember rationing, but I believe my mother had a ration card for me when I was a baby. I do remember the penny, and the halfpenny, and the shop near my primary school with the 1d, 2d and 3d trays.
