I typically go off product reviews either on Amazon or Consumer Reports. A friend has a Consumer Reports online account, these are the top 5 recommend by Consumer Reports:
KitchenAid KDTM354DSS
KitchenAid KDTM354ESS
Kenmore Elite 12793
Kenmore Elite 12803
Kenmore Elite 12833

they all scored 85 out of 100, which was the highest in their testing.

They rated dishwasher brands in general (obviously its going to vary by model) by percentage of models for each brand that were repaired or had a serious problem between 2010 and 2014 (70,000 respondents):

Bosch
9%

Whirlpool
10%

GE
13%

Miele
13%

Kenmore
14%

Maytag
15%

Frigidaire
16%

KitchenAid
18%

LG
18%

Samsung
24%

higher the percentage, the less reliable. So, avoid Samsung!

I didn't know dishwashers were so prone to breaking. Even 1 in 10 is not a good number over 4 years.

I suspect the figures are skewed towards reporting failures. People are probably more willing to complain that something broke, than to report that everything worked as expected, which is soooo boring.

So true. The one we currently have is 1.5 years old, and starting to have issues. Repair guy we know says these counter top ones last 2 to 4 years on average and parts cost more then a new one.... But they are just made in China for different companies who put a name on them.

Danby and RCA are the same exact machine, just different branding.

Once this one goes, going to get a portable full size, just wish they were not like 700+ tax when a comparable built in is 350.

We currently have a Bosch here in Europe and it has been excellent. However it is integrated, so in other words has a wooden kitchen door unit fitted to the front which makes it invisible as an appliance. The fridge freezer is also integrated.
This appears to be a European thing versus American but I much prefer this look. Are integrated appliances available in the US?

I have Asko dishwashers which have been good for the last 5 years. They were already in the house. Best thing is that there are two in the kitchen so after a big dinner you can get everything in and in normal use you never have to wait for the dish washer to finish.

They are very quiet, in fact I am always opening them thinking they are finished but they are still running.

The Asko I bought was surprisingly noisy. I was assured it was as quiet as the Bosch; it wasn't.

Consumer Reports? Don't make me laugh. Look at the utter shit they recommend.

They state Bosch and Miele are two of the worst dishwasher brands? Utter fools.

For reference - Bosch in the US are the equivalent to their (high end) Siemens offering in Europe. As a result, their quality is significantly better in the US than in Europe (where Bosch is now a budget offering).

Miele, of course, are untouched in being the best dishwasher, but they come at considerable expense in the US. $1600 for a Miele v $800 in the UK is NOT justifiable.

Eh? I would assert that integrated appliances are FAR more an American thing than a European thing. Just look on johnlewis.com at how many standalone dishwashers there are v integrated.

I suggest you read my post again. I even added a comment to avoid any possible confusion "higher the percentage, the less reliable."

They state Bosch is the most reliable brand, followed by Whirlpool, with Miele and GE joint 3rd.

Is it normal for a dishwasher not to have an outer case. The one we got with our house is just covered in some insulation material, there is no metal outer case. It works fine so never thought much of it.

again, read the post. WJS described their use of the word integrated to mean " However it is integrated, so in other words has a wooden kitchen door unit fitted to the front which makes it invisible as an appliance." Not a reference to freestanding, but a reference to being 'concealed' with a wood door that matches the ret of the cabinets.

That's how our new one came a few weeks ago; and how the old one looked when we took it out. So it must be the norm here.
