Commute Times
We realized lately, that despite complaining about commute times, we actually spend less time commuting now than we did when we lived in Yorkshire.
We lived in Holmfirth and worked in Wakefield, distance of around 20 miles, commute time was between 60 and 90 minutes.
When we lived in LA, we lived in Woodland Hills, and commuted in opposite directions, both around 20 miles away. My morning commute would take 30 minutes, but on an evening up to 60 minutes. Hubby was between 45 and 60 minutes each way.
Now hubby commutes from Mountain View to Burlingame, again around 20 miles. His commute time each way is normally 30 minutes, but can be up to 60 minutes. My commute time is from my bedroom to my office
The only time we've had a good commute was when we lived in Milton Keynes, if traffic was clogged up, you just turned right at the next roundabout and problem solved
So, are your commute times better or worse where you live now, compared to in England?

Re: Commute Times
Went from commuting by rail, Medway to London to commuting by rail, Westchester to NYC. Door-to-door the time is about the same, about 90 mins each way. Metro-North is far more reliable than Southeastern though; I'd be extremely late home around once a month on Southeastern. Here it happens less than once a year.

Re: Commute Times
My current commute is about 25 miles and 30 minutes each way. Rarely do I encounter any traffic jams. It's just a relaxing drive, several miles of which is over water.
It includes a toll bridge ($3.75/day) but the alternate route avoiding the toll would probably take 45-60 minutes. The toll is money well spent.
The last time I had an office-based job (before this one) would be over 20 years ago in Yorkshire. I lived in Sherburn-in Elmet and commuted to Heckmondwike. A good run would be 45 minutes but often took well over an hour.
Most of my work life has been field or home-office based. The commute to my basement office was always a breeze.

Re: Commute Times
Went from living 5 minutes away from my office in Cambridge to 30 miles here in Denver.
Mornings aren't too bad, usually takes around 30-50 minutes if I take the toll road (which they just upped the price on, thanks for that!). Evenings are crap. Usually a minimum of 60-70 minutes.
I work from home about 2-3 days a week though which softens the blow. I'm WFH all of this week due to my car being dead.

Re: Commute Times
My 'commute' is a walk from the kitchen to the office - a distance of about 15 feet or so.
Of course, it can be longer if I forget to pick up coffee on the way!

Re: Commute Times
Home to the Vancouver airport is about 9 miles, all city streets.
Going to work for a 12 noon start, leaving home at 10:45am takes on average 40 mins to the employee parking lot, and then another 10 to 15 mins from the employee lot to our office air side.
Going home, the same 10-15 mins to the parking lot, then about 25 mins coming home from the parking lot coming home at close to 1am.

45 minutes ish before into Sheffield.
Now it's 20-30 minutes depending on the time I leave. However, I did purchase this house specifically for this short commute.

Re: Commute Times
30 minutes at my last job in the UK...I walked! 15 minutes if I rode my bike.
15 minutes drive for my commute now providing there is not a train stopped on the tracks.

Re: Commute Times
Much better here. I can make it to/from the office in 15 minutes with optimal traffic but even with moderate traffic it rarely takes me more than 25 minutes with very little stop/start driving except for a small pair of intersections that can get backed up if the lights don't sync up just so. Very pleasant indeed.
Compared to back home when the 12 mile drive into Belfast for work would often take me upwards of an hour if I didn't leave the house before 6:30. It's been improved and widened to four lanes right through now but there was a section of about 3-4 miles where it went from a 50 mph 4 lane dual carriageway to a 40 mph 2 lane single carriageway, then a brief section of 4 lane single carriageway before the motorway started. On one of the busiest 5 miles of road in all of Northern Ireland. It could be done in 45 minutes on the train but at that time they were still using 70s and 80s rolling stock, and while I have a tinge of nostalgia for the good old diesel thumbers, they would regularly break down without warning and leave you stranded while waiting for another train to come rescue you, so they were often worse than driving in

40 minutes in the UK down to just under 25 here. I have a company vehicle here though, so I see a massive difference in my gas bill here compared to the UK.
