It will be interesting to see how the fans react.

Yes, I know all that. Though one has to wonder what the reaction would have been if a nice upstanding white QB had done it...

But they wouldn't have done, which I guess is the whole reason for the controversy in the first place.

Once the pre season games are out of the way, this'll all become a non event, as he ain't gonna feature much in the 9ers season this year.

nfl journalist clay davis nails it:
Colin Kaepernick Is an Idiot | Outkick The Coverage
as a football fan, worth pointing out kaepernick is one of a number of painfully average quarterbacks in the nfl and had lost his starting job ages ago. he's been injured for ages and out of form even longer. he was already due to be traded but ironically, the 49ers will probably feel they have to keep him on the roster to avoid the inevitable accusations of discrimination

Good for Kaepernick sticking to his principles tonight. I see he wasn't alone in doing so tonight.

Kaepernick, Reid take a knee during national anthem - NFL.com
Note last paragraph...
The 49ers have supported Kaepernick's right to protest the anthem.
"Players are encouraged but not required to stand during the playing of the national anthem," the NFL said in a statement obtained by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport last week.

Re: Colin Kaepernick and the National Anthem
He has the freedom during the national anthem to stand, to sit, or to turn cartwheels across the grass if he wants.
Everyone else has the freedom to disagree with him, criticize him, ridicule him, and in a country where employment is "at will" (I am not even sure regular employment law applies to pro athletes), he could be fired for causing negative publicity to his team, sponsors, or the league.
That is how "freedom" works.

Tommie Smith, iconic 1968 Olympics activist, defends Colin Kaepernick's protest
I remember the shock of watching Smith and his colleague making their protest at the 1968 Olympics. I guess the US hasn't made much progress since then, if people like Abu Nazir disrespect Smith's bravery.

BLM supporters fill city streets as protest, right-wingers complain. BLM supporting sportsman sits down out of the way for 30 seconds as protest, right-wingers complain. There is no winning for anyone who thinks there is still a racial bias in America.

Yes, everyone is familiar with this narrative, it puts the U.S. in the right and makes the British look like the aggressors. But I think it is closer to the truth to suggest (as in the article linked in the OP) that the war of 1812 was a war of aggression launched by the war party in the U.S. Congress to invade and annex Canada. The impressment issue was just a weak excuse. Why in 1812? Because Britain had its hands full in the war with France, so the U.S. thought they could easily take Canada.

Re: Colin Kaepernick and the National Anthem
Problem with the impressment narrative was that American consuls were actively selling US citizenship (protection papers) to any British sailor who wanted them in order avoid being Shanghaied into the Royal Navy. Unsurprisingly the Royal Navy took a dim view of this and refused to recognise any British-born subject as a US citizen.

Funny, every time I see the initials "BLM" I think Bureau of Land Management. Another crazy wing nut talking point.

Completely incorrect. People have the right to say whatever they want, but others equally have the right to be angered by what they say.

If you want to wear socks with pigs on them wearing police hats then the general assumption is that you think all police are pigs
