Default Charcoal?!

Never used it, always been an indoor cooker until my surprising relocation to the states.

OH always had propane but now I have the real deal I'm interested in what Coal to get.

Whole Foods do one, which might just be what I get first. I'm not looking for anything with chemicals in it.

Any suggestions welcome, feel free to fight viciously over your own opinions also.

whatever charcoal you get, you should get a starter chimney.

And why I'm going to avoid kingsford.
Well, according to Kingsford, here is what is in their briquettes and what each ingredient is used for: wood char (heat source), mineral char (heat source), mineral carbon (heat source), limestone (uniform visual ashing), starch (binder), borax (press release), sodium nitrate (ignition aid), sawdust (ignition aid).

You really don't need one... make a layer of charcoal put some lighter fuel on, heap the rest of your coal one top then put more lighter fuel on. I have never used a chimney.

I don't use an outdoor grill myself, but from the few BBQ's I've been to, I always see a Kingsford charcoal bag hanging around.

With a chimney you just use a couple of sheets of newspaper, you don't have the lighter fluid taste.

That's the main reason I'm converting the old bucket into a chimney! No lighter fluid, which is another expense as well as tasting rank if you get it wrong

Well some is more harmful than others, then there's the taste factor to take into account. I've been staring at piles of wood in my garden all day but most of it's treated.

Lighter fluid is the greatest stuff in history. I put it on everything. Charcoal, tennis balls, weird artistic shapes I make in the driveway. It's just way too much fun to keep in the grill.

Best to have a fire extinguisher handy though...

Kingsford is the top brand of charcoal.

This is me grilling:
