Calling all wineo's!

I am by far an expert on wine and not really a big wine drinker, however for some weird reason I have been craving it lately.
I have been in the US almost 6 years and have NEVER bought a bottle of wine here.
Can anyone recommend a nice sweet/med white wine? not too pricey just a nice one.

On - and shameless plug. I see that you're in Grand Rapids. Get to the Ann Arbor art festival between Wednesday and Saturday of this week if you can so I can live vicariously through you.

Go find a store that is geared to more gourmet food. I work for Whole Foods but Trader Joes, Central Market in Texas etc. They should have some one on the staff that will guide you to your tastes.
I love the dryer Wines from Chile and Australia but they will have the skills to show you. California wines are good too but I enjoy the crisper tastes from newer areas in the wine world.
Also I have a golden rule that keeps things in perspective. For a good wine I can drink and also feel good about I spend more than $10.00 and less than $20.00. The high end is for Very special times only!
Hope that helps some.

I'm a fan of Riesling. It starts off dry but leaves a nice sweet taste at the end. I find that it's very refreshing when served cold. Here's one that you can find at the WorldMarket. I think the last time I had this bottle it was priced very reasonably, under $15 I believe.
World Market
Also, my ex bought who introduced me to Riesling brought over a bottle to my condo for dinner. It was really great when paired with pasta. This one is priced closer to $20.

I think I am still remembering the old stories from my college days of German wines lacking the alcohol strength to make the grade and tabloids shouting about how they added "Anti-Freeze" to make them 8% proof!
Now I'm older I now know what anti-freeze is.......Alcohol.
I really never liked them that much anyway but there sure sell a bunch so what do I know?

Seeing as you're in GR, have you ever checked out GB Russo's? They are an international grocer and they have an EXCELLENT selection of wine, far better than Meijer or Fresh Market. Plus, if you're not sure about which wine meets your requirements the staff are really knowledgeable and willing to help.

I always manage to spend over $100 every time I go there!
Enjoy!

We used to like to try various varieties of German wines when we lived in the UK. Unfortunately all they seem to have over here is Reisling and maybe the occasional Gerwutztraminer. We do like the Optima and Bacchus grape varieties, but haven't found that type here. A nice red is an Italian one, Sangiovese.

Funnily enough, I just finished a bottle of a medium white bottle of wine. It's called Köster-Wolf, Riesling Trocken, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2003. My local, independent wine shop sells a liter bottle for $9.99! Very good too.
Don't let the screw top cap put you off.

Good point about the screw top cap - while it just seems wrong to me - it's supposed to be a much better solution.
