Default British meat back on the menu

US set to import British beef and lamb for the first time in 20 years

It doesn't mention anything about bacon

I'm pretty sure you're joking, but the article specifically says "red meat", which has no bearing on the importation of pork products.

Yes , I was joking. I wonder if the let up on meat products means that there is potential that I will be able to donate blood again in my lifetime.

I wonder the same thing some times, but the last I read, just a year or two back, is that despite there now being negligible vCJD cases, we're potential carriers of an as-yet unidentifiable agent that can transmit the disease through blood donations.

Washington State in the US had BSE. My wifes , friends dad died from vJD a few years back. He had never been to England or had a blood transfusion.

The connection between vCJD and BSE is not certain. There was a life-long vegetarian in the UK died of vCJD, as did a young girl who was born after the great cattle cull so pretty much couldn't have eaten infected beef.

But whichever way you look at it, vCJD is an extremely rare disease, and being a victim of an ISIS inspired spree killer is a much greater risk, .... even though the risk of that is already negligible.

I had a dozen pork pies confiscated at LAX when I arrived in LA after a a trip back home.

I told the customs guy that pork had nothing to do with mad cow disease. Didn't make any difference. Into the basket they went

Pork is not mad cow, it's foot and mouth.

What this tells me is the UK govt. is really desperate to show any sort of good news they can about Brexit. The guy from the NFU cracked me up:

Charles Sercombe, livestock board chairman at the National Farmer's Union, which represents British farmers, said: “The US is potentially a huge and affluent market that has strong links to the UK as we share history and language.”
OMG, (a) does he realize that the west of the US was essentially colonized to raise cattle and (b) what has history or language got to do with eating beef?

Meat imports aren't allowed by private individuals, except from Canada and Mexico, period. This is why I am so desperate for CETA to come into force ASAP. So at least in Canada we can get the stuff. Not that there's anything wrong with Canadian meat but the pork pies here are a bit rum. And I wouldn't mind some Shippham's spread. The salmon one is legal but not the chicken or beef.

If the customs official had been capable of reaching that level of logic I could have given him some credit. He was just a bloody minded bureaucrat however who thought that anything foreign with animal products in it had to be the bringer of some kind of dreadful plague
