The best American food that British are unaware of?

well, the chilli is the skyline "cincinnati style" ie greek chilli, but thats just a layer underneath, followed by a layer of cream chees, then a layer of shredded "orange" cheese (i think it's supposed to be cheddar!) and then in the oven for a bit to melt the cheese. DOn't like Skyline much (noodles with chilli?!), but the dip is good!

After living in the South for a combined total of 19 years I finally ate grits. Not by choice mind you, but I was doing a group cruise presentation at a church and they were serving breakfast. They kindly fixed me a plate and there there lying in all their granular, white, bland glory was a HUGE helping of grits. Well to be polite I ate 'em. I won't be doing that again.

If you happen to be in the Puget Sound area you might want to sample a geoduck (pronounced gooey-duck). Here's a piccie of one before it has been cooked.

1. ground beef seasoned with chili seasonings
2. refried beans (usually tinned, ewwwww)
3. picante salsa or chopped tomatoes
4. guacamole or avocados
5. black olives
6. sour cream
7. grated cheese (monterey Jack or cheddar or both)
There are several variations, obviously, and some opt for a veggie version (no ground beef) or a more classy version (eg the "California" style) or a homemade version (homemade refritos and guacamole). I can't bear beans in any form and am not fond of guacamole either. I prefer a torta layered with sun-dried tomatoes, cream cheese, and basil pesto, topped with pine nuts.

It's the Cincinnati analogue to our seven-layer dip which usually has:
1. ground beef seasoned with chili seasonings
2. refried beans (usually tinned, ewwwww)
3. picante salsa or chopped tomatoes
4. guacamole or avocados
5. black olives
6. sour cream
7. grated cheese (monterey Jack or cheddar or both)

only 1,6,7... but a bit of cinnamon taste that changes the way 6 and 7 taste.
sounds good anyway

Americans love layered dips that can be made pretty readily.... I'd rather have trifle!

Not good for the waistband though I'm afraid!
Cutina - you'll have to bring a few cans home and you can fix it for your friends, or whenever you're jonesing for it.

The dip is very good. I line the bottom of a casserole dish with cream cheese, sprinkle chopped red onion, pour on the skyline, and top with grated cheddar cheese (the regular kind!). Then bake. It must be served with tortilla chips.
