I also use the BBC as one of my news outlets. I'm so confused by this post, I haven't had any 'subscribe to continue' pop ups, neither has the misses who uses the app.

They have been getting advertisment heavy though.

It seems you read the BBC app on your phone. It looks like the app is still okay for now. Not sure they plan to change that. I was talking about the actual BBC Website which you would read on your computer. I am not big on apps (font too small on phone for me). I read the BBC news on my computer. It's got a lot more news and you can click into all the different areas of the UK and read the news, plus a bunch of other stuff. That's what's changing. You can only see the headlines now. If you try to click in to read a news story the paywall will pop up. Not sure if that will start happening with the app too. The app has a lot less news.

No I look at the website on my phone (i'm also not big on apps) this is so strange, I went on the website several times today and never got anything about a subscription.

I can view the BBC website on my laptops in the US without any issues. I have script blockers, so maybe they are enabling me. I don't want to turn them off to find out in case it stops working.

Interesting, that US people who don’t pay to subscribe still have access to Radio 4 and the World Service. Implication being that you’d need to pay to subscribe to get access to Radio 3. I used to listen to Radio 4 regularly, but no longer. As for Radio 3, not so keen on the format anymore. We stream WQXR (New York,) or WCRB (Boston) if we want good quality 24 hour classical music with a minimum of tedious chatter in between pieces - and of course, no advertising as they are public radio.

You (I) could buy them at the Irish Deli on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, NY. Go next door to the Butcher's Fancy and get all your British sausage, i.e. black pudding, etc., steak and kidney pies, etc.

Both the Beeb and CNN block access for me fairly quickly when I use Google Chrome on the Chromebook, I can skirt both by using incognito mode although the Beeb site is riddled with ads and popups.

I use Edge. It blocks me. I might purchase a subscription.

This evening I bring up the BBC website front page. Major news stuff. I click on one of the mainstream headlines and get sent to here:

https://www.bbc.com/subscribe

This also applies to the website on the phone.

Bit by bit the paywall is being built...

Edge works in a “Private” tab, at least for now. If that should change then a DNS service or VPN will be the way to go. Both considerably cheaper (and more useful) than handing cash to the BBC.

I know we’re not in TIO. But given the choice, I’m in the “hand cash to the BBC” crew. Up here in the New York north country, we are lucky to have two good radio stations - north country public radio, and CBC Radio One from Ottawa. I’ve always found it frustrating that Canadians are free to support North Country Public Radio financially, even though it’s in a foreign country, but there’s no way for the millions of Americans who listen to CBC to shovel a bit of cash in their direction. Same idea as helping the BBC out …

I'd pay for a "TV License" in a heartbeat to gain (legal) access to iPlayer. I'm not willing to go the same route to fund a website that only contains content I can get for free in a thousand other places. I'm also not thrilled that this paywall (apparently) is only to be used in N. America and nowhere else.

Anyhow, just putting it out there that there are options. I suspect most people do not have the will and/or the inclination for a work-around and will simply dump the site and go elsewhere. That doesn't seem a great outcome for anyone.

Yeah, no, totally agree with this. And that is certainly the danger in this environment; that you just give up on a potential news & information source when they go the paywall route. As you say, there’s plenty of other places to go.
