I know that you can miss those little things that you take for granted when you dont have them any more and I do believe our first one is bacon! Yes we american have "streaky bacon" and he is missing his back bacon. Honestly I prefer back bacon as well having had it so much when I was in the UK as well. Problem is I can't find it anywhere! Anyone have any ideas? Places I might look or someone I might ask? We live in a small rural town in Oklahoma but travel frequently to TX for shopping. Any ideas would be very appreciated

Please tell us, then we'll all know. Unfortunately Americans, including Mrs P, seem to think that bacon is flavoured fat, not cured meat. ..... Canadians, on the other hand, seem to think that bacon is cured shoe leather!

I'm still intending to have a go at making my own bacon from a pork tenderloin, as other BE'ers have reported great success with a "wet cure".

Mmm, I *love* American bacon, one of the best parts of living here.

My first thought too, although to be fair (prepare to flame!), I can take it, but its a bit like Chinese take away curry - it's acceptable as long as I don't think of it as curry. So, American bacon is OK as a foodstuff, as long as you don't think of it as bacon, or even bacon substitute

I can agree with that, it's not bad, per se, it's just not bacon. On our periodic forays to Waffle House for breakfast on a weekend, I now usually get "country ham", which is like over-sized bacon, with lots of bacony meat and very little fat.

On the subject of Chinese food, why do American Chinese take-aways only offer "Broccoli and .... . " dishes?

I just had to throw some bacon away. I let it go off.

Hadn't really noticed that, partly because I love broccoli, and partly because if I'm in a chinese restaurant, I'm normally just happy to be looking at a menu that doesn't have cheese and/or cinnamon on every single freaking dish ..............

In my defence, M'lud, I hadn't had it very long at all. It wasn't past its sell by date even. Must have been a bad batch You have no idea how disappointed I was when I got home late last night with a bacon sarnie in mind. Good news though - I can pop down the road and get some more.

"I'm alright, Jack, pull up the ladder." That's a fine attitude!
