I know...I've seen them. On the day we were in Chester* a touring American choir was signing to the crowd on the bandstand alongside the River Dee, singing "Let's Do It" and when they got to the bit which goes "In shallow shoals English soles do it" they all raised their arms in salute to the (English) crowd

Not far from the bandstand, right on the very banks of the river, is a pub which has a very nautical/waterside theme...heaving with people on the day we were there....the loos had respective headings above the doors...."Gulls" and "Buoys".

Red sandstone cathedral alongside the red sandstone ROman walls circa AD 79.....at a certain spot along the walls is a sort of look out post tower, part of the feature of the walls, with steps leading up to a door alongside which is a notice which reads: "From this spot King Charles I watched the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1642".

In another part of the city the remains of the Roman Amphitheatre. The Rows are unique to Chester...two rows of shops built one above the other, with steps at regular intervals up from the street, with shopping arcades leading inwards from the upper level.

The rows were erected as a sort of defence against the "marauding Welsh hordes" as Chester stands very close to the Welsh border, but no chance of marauding Welsh hordes these days....not really sure on that one....maybe there still is.

*As part of my membership of the UK Association for Roman Archaeology - one fantastic weekend in Chester with other members, including my partner.....the Grosvenor Hotel, owned by Gerald, Duke of Westminster...alongside that amazing bridge carrying the Roman Road across the main street (Eastgate I think) in the city centre, and bearing this huge clock.

The bridge and clock stands between Foregate Steet (before the clock) and Eastgate Street (east of the clock). When my daughter was small I collected her from school on Fridays at midday. We took a picnic lunch and sat in the gardens of the cathedral...she loved to feed the birds.

We lived not far from The Duke....he was often all along side me when we were waiting in traffic taking our daughters to school.

I remember my primary school trip to the amphitheatre. A homeless guy yelled at us. :(
