Even Air Canada who does in house still pays pretty low, just under 11/hr or so, I think they offered me 10.92 when I interviewed last year, somewhere around there anyhow. Plus they have no guarantee of hours, and needed to be available 0 to 40 hours a week.
Never worked the ramp at Heathrow, but I met up with the director of the local biz jet copany while I was still doing flying visits over here to see about a job. Baggage, fueling, marshaling, the works. Really fancied doing it, meeting went well, he told me to get in touch when I moved over. Great. Then he told me pay was $12 p/h. Not so great. Could never afford to live on that where I am.

A few of the Arizona GOPers that voted for the bill are now backing away from it.

“While our sincere intent in voting for this bill was to create a shield for all citizens’ religious liberties, the bill has instead been mischaracterized by its opponents as a sword for religious intolerance. These allegations are causing our state immeasurable harm,” wrote Arizona state Sens. Adam Driggs, Steve Pierce, and Bob Worsley. “As Arizona leaders, we feel it is important to loudly proclaim that we strongly condemn discrimination in any form.”

"A shield for all citizens religious liberties." As long as they are Evangelical Christians, it would seem. "We condemn discrimination in any form." Doesn't seem that way.

I have always believed in this quote.

When Fascism come to America it will be wrapped in the Flag and carrying a Bible. - unknown author.

It's already here, fighting to take control.

All of a sudden. One guesses they suddenly got lots of emails and calls from their voters and want to try and save face and join the [hopefully] winning side.

Alaska Airlines has proven you can outsource your hubs.

Delta has a hub in Detroit, and just announced 741 lay offs, now while they will have some ramp in house, they are outsourcing a good chunk of it to Menzies, and some company called Prospect.

Westjet in Canada also out sources pretty much all of their ramps, Calgary is the only city where they have their own employees.

Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto are all large stations, mini-hubs and all are out sourced. A hub can be outsourced.

I've checked several union contracts for the majors who are union, and I can't locate one where 26/hr is normal pay.

Hubs will be outsourced, and 11/hr for an outsourcing company in the US is generous, most pay 2-3/hr less unless min. wage is above 10/hr.

Hubs can easily be outsourced and eventually most will be, easier to do the field stations first.

12/hr and under is about the going rate for ramp these days, even if you are directly employed by an airline. Yes some go up to 20-24/hr after you put in 20+ years, but chances are you'd be laid off or outsourced well before you got to that service time.

Yeah, that's been a quote I read many years ago, and greatly feared it would happen. I agree that it is here unfortunately.

The bill was vetoed which shows the system actually worked in this instance. Good news for Arizona.

I have my suspicions that she would not have vetoed it if there had not been so much blowback and even objections from the party hierarchy. In any event, agreed, good for Arizona.

In other news, a federal judge struck down the Texas gay marriage ban. Good decision.

The slave owners often used biblical reference to justify slavery, the curse of Ham or Cham depending on whether it is Jewish text or otherwise. Something to do with Noah putting a curse on one of his sons, who was black, or his father was, or he sired black children, not sure. Noah said something about being now to be servant. The Catholic church held that view, the curse on blacks, until probably 140 or so years ago.

It was used to justify, not just slavery, but also segregation and discrimination after slavery was abolished. There are still many in the faith that hold that view. So, it is not a great leap to think that that law might have triggered a resurgence of discrimination against blacks on deeply held religious grounds.

The same biblical argument was often used to justify what was done to the native Americans. Problem is, it seems a false interpretation of what the bible actually says.

People need to keep their "deeply held religious beliefs" to themselves and leave the rest of us alone.

Here's proof that some of our representatives here in Arizona might have a difficult time finding their own way to a modern toilet, let alone write an acceptable bill without unintended consquences.

You were saying?

The Arizona Catholic Conference released a statement urging supporters to encourage Brewer to sign the bill into law.

"The threats to religious liberty have become very real... S.B. 1062 will help avoid the situations being experienced around the country where businesses are being forced to close because of their owners' faith," the organization's statement read.

Well, they did drop the "cursed blacks" thing. A Papal decree or some such. That said, no one claims they stopped being stupid.

I'd be interested to know what businesses have had to close because of their owners faith. Sounds like a straw horse to me,. I suppose it refers to businesses that might have been successfully sued for discrimination, and I have no sympathy. It is their imposition of their religious beliefs on others.

Yes, I suspect it might have sailed on by without the backlash. The Center for AZ Policy and Cathi Herrod have pumped too much cash in to this for this to be end of it I fear.

I have to say, Brewer's veto letter makes interesting reading. One could read a lot into it.
