Apocalypse Plans?

Just wondered if anyone had anything special planned for this Saturday?
We were meant to be going to see U2 (not my choice, but the ticket was free).

But apparently it all goes down this Saturday, starting in Japan. 7,000 years ago, it was a flood. This time it will be by fire apparently.

We have the billboards here in Denver, plus I've seen those vans around town, and in Chicago.

I guess I'm pretty much farked. Are you any of you righteous enough to be raptured?

Oh yes there are some billboards around here, but I have to admit I had failed to mark my calendar for this important event.

I guess we could all meet in the BE pub

Apparently, it goes through October.

The only person I can see being saved on here is Michael.

I debated about going to U2 but line up doesn't look all that good; their last album sucked imo.

I heard about that guy spending 140G's... can't believe someone would but not too surprised ... Forrest Gump sums it well - 'stupid is as stupid does'....

They were advertising for ages on the bill boards around here...then ran out of money so the boards are now advertising Shell petrol, though amusingly enough they were advertising BJ's Wholesellers before hand

That one guy is 60 years old and only has $140,000 in life savings?? (Or had, until he blew it all.)

That looks, uh, flammable...

So, I am torn in some respects. On the one hand, I don't want to suffer a fiery and abrupt end - indeed, I have so much yet to see and do - but then if it doesn't happen, I'll feel really bad for the people who gave up all their possessions/life savings etc.

Does anyone know what time this is all going to go down? By the time it is the 21st here at GMT -6, it will already have been the 21st elsewhere in the world . I suppose since Harold Camping is a Yank, it'll probably be at 12 (11 central).

I think I'll just stay in Friday night and have a wank.

It's tempting, Sultan, but I think the prudent thing to do is be as pious and ascetic as you can be for the next few days.

If we're all getting judged, and Heaven has limited seating, a few fewer sins on your scorecard could squeak out someone else. Something to think about.

I think if that's on the scorecard, I tossed myself out of the running long ago . . .

May 21st 2011 is by coincidence the 10th Anniversary of my moving to the US so I wouldn't be at all surprised if something big went on. Personally i'm hoping it doesn't rain so I can take my newly resprayed bike out to the bike blessing.

:D

That is brilliant. The only issue I find fault with is that everyone knows all dogs will go to Heaven. It's just a given. Not cats. Evil little bastards.

Bugger. That's really going to mess up my daughter's 13th birthday. Mind you, with 10 tweens 'sleeping' over, I might welcome death as an opportunity for a nice rest:)

The really weird thing is that my son's 18th birthday is on December 21st 2012, which is when the world is going to end...or something. Have I spawned devil children (or angel children?) without realising?

nethead May 18th 2011 6:04 am

Re: Apocalypse Plans?

It's one of my son's birthday on Saturday, he'll be 8. Apart from celebrating his birthday we have an all day soccer fun day event to go to, so I'm a bit too busy for The Rapture. We did have a flyer through the door today about the world ending on May 21st, why etc, but haven't had a chance to read it yet

Re: Apocalypse Plans?

I'm willing to accept bets of up to $1m, and will give good odds as well, that the world won't end on 5/21/11 or 12/21/12. Would you believe that so far I've had no takers ;)

Re: Apocalypse Plans?

We've told our son (the one that's going to be 18 on the big bang day) that if it will make his birthday less of a downer, we'll get him a Ferrari for his 18th, so he can go out with a smile on his face.

We also told him that we'll be hedging our bets and ordering it in his name;)

He knows we're bullsh*t merchants, so just gives us the rollyeyes and a "What-evvv-ahhh!"

Buy him a Matchbox Ferrari - then you are true to your word, but you only have to pay £2.99 ;)

I'll be in Canada that day. Since Canada is a quiet country that few people worldwide know of, the world choas should not effect that country and all those within their border should be fine.

It does make me wonder if there will be a lot of mass suicides on May 22nd, people thinking they weren't raptured and going all 'Heaven's Gate'

It's funny, I drive by a lot of churches who have advertisements for summer fairs in June . . .

Perfect! Excellent tightwaddery. As his older brother only gets to use a clapped out Mercury Mystique, I'm sure our SD2 is more than a little suspicious of the whole Ferrari thing-clever lad. He will, however, be able to use the Mercury, end-of-the-world allowing, and if it lasts that long (the Mercury, not the world)

I like the idea of the God-botherers selling off their stuff though- there has got to be some good stuff coming on the market,no?

This is what I don't get...aren't there supposed to only be 140,000 places in Heaven for the worthy? Surely it would be full by now...or is there some sort of timeshare thing going on?

I think that's just the Jehova's Witnesses, or Mennonites or one of those groups. JW hold the record for the most failed EOTW predictions of anyone - well over 15 since the mid 1800s all the way through the 1990s :)

This new rapture phenomenon is not mainstream Christian by a long way anyway, the bloke who started it also said this would happen in 1994. You go to any church and ask the priest/vicar/whoever about this and they'll probably have a good laugh!

And the Mayans didn't know shit either, they couldn't predict the end of their own civilization, all they did was run out of space on the stone they were using for their calendar.

Octang Frye May 18th 2011 7:02 am

Re: Apocalypse Plans?

Pascal's Wager (or Pascal's Gambit) is a suggestion posed by the French philosopher, mathematician, and physicist Blaise Pascal that even if the existence of God cannot be determined through reason, a rational person should wager as though God exists, because living life accordingly has everything to gain, and nothing to lose. Pascal formulated his suggestion uniquely on the God of Jesus Christ as implied by the greater context of his Pensées, a posthumously published collection of notes made by Pascal in his last years as he worked on a treatise on Christian apologetics. The Wager was set out in note 233 of this work.

To summarize, it's a good bet to believe in God, because:
1. If there isn't, at least you've led a good life by a good moral code.
2. If there is, and you're naughty, you'll be smited/smote and send to H E double hockey sticks. So best believe.

The Mayan calendar doesn't come to an end next year. It's a common misconception.
A Mayan period of time - can't remember what it is - comes to an end, but the actual calendar goes off some 400,000 years hence.

It's all the New Agers who are spinning and re-spinning this stuff. It's in popular culture, and it's self-propagating now.
